DQ Identify either a safety or quality improvement initiative related to improving population health

Healthcare organizations face pressing problems that require swift solutions. Examples of problems include medical errors, delayed patient discharge, hospital-acquired infections, and any others, which in one way or another affects population health. According to Sauers et al. (2017), quality improvement is a concept that ensures health care providers provide high-quality, safe, timely, and patient-centered care. Therefore, to improve population health, nurse leaders and managers should incorporate translational research in developing quality improvement initiatives to improve health care services. For example, in this discussion, physical fitness and healthy eating habits positively impact population health. For instance, Baumann (2019) opined that healthy eating and drinking quality water play a vital role in improving health status among the aging population. In a randomized control trial, Baumann (2019) found that older men and women who did not participate in physical exercise and engaged in bad eating habits experienced health conditions such as increased body weight, joint problems, and cardiovascular-related problems. Therefore, with translational research, health care researchers can assess and evaluate whether physical activities and good eating habits would improve aging and longevity.

Translational research can be used to influence the development of health initiatives aimed at improving the health population. This course has emphasized that translational research involves four stages, T1, T2, T3, and T4. In the given an example, stage two (T2) which test efficacy and effectiveness of health initiatives can be integrated into the current research to evaluate the correlation between physical exercise and good eating habit and aging and longevity. The findings obtained will determine whether the proposed initiative will improve the healthy population, particularly among the elderly.

I do agree with your statement that healthcare organizations face many daily challenges that range from simple operational problems to complex clinical and medical errors that put the lives of the patients in danger. Healthcare organizations and professionals have a

responsibility of ensuring that they do offer quality care that helps promote the safety of patients, proper recovery and reduced chances of readmission. In order to achieve these objectives, it is imperative for healthcare organizations to carry out proper EBP and enhance translational research that will put the EBP outcomes into proper clinical practice (Weiss et al., n.d.). One example of clinical challenge where translational research is crucial is the reduction in catheter -associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) among patients in the renal department. The EBP research outcomes focuses on educational programs for the nurses and short-term indwelling as some of the efficient methods of reducing incidences of CAUTI (Atkins et al., 2020). Additionally, in order to achieve the desired objectives, it is imperative to enhance multidisciplinary teams’ approach and collaborative working.

The hospital systems face different challenges that cause delays, clinical variations, and preventable medical errors, which hinder quality care. Due to such challenges, the hospital systems have implemented various initiatives to ensure consistent improvement of population health. One such initiative is the National Public Health Improvement Initiative developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to infuse the quality of population health in the US. The initiative has fostered the health systems’ ability to use data to make decisions, which has proven critical in improving healthcare practices. According to CDC (2017), the National Public Health Improvement Initiative has facilitated quality improvement in about 86% of health agents in the country.

Nonetheless, the initiative can be further be fortified through translational research. Translational research is crucial in improving the population health as it allows for the health agencies to adopt and implement meaningful and applicable procedures to benefit human health. One important translational research that the National Public Health Improvement Initiative can utilize to improve the quality of health is boosting readiness and competencies to reduce clinical variation. The use of stout analytics and strong physician champions is likely to improve the organizational strength of healthcare systems and consequently improve the outcomes. Such an approach has been used by the healthcare system in Western Illinois. The Health Catalyst (2018) states that after boosting readiness and changing competencies, UnityPoint Health greatly reduced clinical variation, variable costs, and delays in the western Illinois healthcare system. Therefore, the translational research aiming to boost readiness and change competencies in the National Public Health Improvement Initiative is likely to yield remarkable results as seen in the case of western Illinois.

I do agree with you that translational research is key to the implementation of population health promotion measures. These measures provide community members with scientifically verified methods that will help them maintain a healthy life through diet, exercise and cessation of irresponsible and risky behaviors such as excessive consumption of alcohol, cigarette smoking, vaping and substance abuse. Through translational research, community health workers and leaders have the best platform on which to carry out sensitization through educational programs (Boström et al., 2018). One example of a community health promotion measure that requires translational research is the use of educational program that aims at reducing vaping among the youth. Research was conducted and adequate tools of data collection and analysis used before coming up with a strategy on how, when, where and why carry out the educational programs to attain a high level of success. Vaping has been one of the emerging healthcare concerns among the youth in major cities hence the need to develop healthcare educational program that is well researched and scientifically viable to tackle the issue (Wang et al., 2021).
