Interview Questions at Care Medical Center
1. Health care organizations face various IT problems. Which problem poses the greatest risk here?
2. Health-related IT tasks are like projects. Which project development methodology do you use?
3. Which are the leading benefits of this methodology?
4. Does it have any significant limitations?
5. Business analysts are critical in health IT projects. Do they have other roles besides problems’ identification?
6. How does the approach used in project development affect outcomes?
7. A health IT professional serving your role must possess some unique skills. Which skills do you have been instrumental towards success in your role?
8. Do you carry out quality assurance?
9. Give reasons based on your answer above?
10. If a nurse is preparing to work in health IT departments, which are the areas likely to produce the biggest career opportunities in the future?

Cognizant of  the role that training plays when it comes to improving a nurse’s competencies in EBP and thus empowering them to contribute to the development of EBP, here are certain strategies that can be undertaken from both an organizational level, to the larger professional level. At the organizational level, the organization can organize for opportunities where their nurses can get trained on evidence based practice. On the greater professional levels, professional bodies such as the ANA and the ANCC have developed certification program for nurses. By including components of evidence based practice  in the certification exams, this ensures that nurses will prepare and apprise themselves on EBP and thus, in order to earn the certification, they will have to be competent in EBP. Alternatively, the institutions can include a whole different certification for EBP, where nurses will specifically be trained on EBP, tested on the same and thus, their competency will be proven by their certification. This will ultimately improve their ability to participate in the development and implementation of EBP.

Health Care Information Technology Professional Interview

Health care organizations have various departments serving different roles. As health care informatics continues to be a critical part of the health practice, information technology (IT) departments are increasingly becoming more influential in health outcomes than ever before. In these departments and as they collaborate with other health care workers, IT professionals develop many projects. Methodologies used affect outcomes differently, and a close assessment of what such professionals do can help understand the relationship between health care provision and information technology better. This section of the paper explains the interview findings with the program developer at Care Medical Center while focusing on project development methodologies and the skills set necessary for an IT professional.

Project Development Methodology

Like in other organizations, project development methodologies in health care organizations differ according to the type of organization, task, and resources. The program developer uses the agile approach. The agile project development method consists of iterations where the project’s completion occurs in incremental steps to promote adaptability (Ohno-Machado & Séroussi, 2019). Its use implies that the project does not follow a linear path. Instead, the outcomes are released in phases as the project continues instead of completing and releasing a final product. The requirements are broken into small pieces as the developer searches for ways to maximize value.

Role of a Business Analyst in Health IT Projects

In the broader IT field, a business analyst is part of the product development team responsible for analyzing systems and processes to outline organizational needs. The role is not different in health IT projects. As Mantas et al. (2018) posited, health care business analysts identify problems and improvement areas within medical facilities, implying that their role in project development is to identify issues that can affect performance to propose solutions. Overall, their role is to optimize performance by identifying problems likely to impede a project’s success.
The project management methodology has prepared business analysts for challenging projects in several ways. In practice, the agile approach breaks requirements into smaller pieces. Accordingly, the challenges are not spread over a project since they are concentrated on different areas as iterations change (Kulkarni et al., 2017). Doing so allows business analysts to look for solutions specific to a particular challenge at a given phase. Rasnacis and Berzisa (2017) further mentioned that the agile framework promotes collaborative working. As a result, recommendations to improve challenging areas can be outsourced before moving to the next phase. Through iterations and collaboration, business analysts are empowered enough to tackle challenging projects.

Application Developer Skill Sets

Success in project development depends primarily on the skills that developers possess. The program developer’s main skill sets include knowledge in designing and building applications, programming language, software design and programming, identifying key application features, and designing creative prototypes. In my career, health informatics is becoming an indispensable part of the practice, and the use of data is critical than ever before. As a result, an in-depth understanding of software and application essentials is critical to secure systems and manipulate data as required without causing any significant risks.

Quality Assurance Process and System Testing Methodology

Health IT projects usually lead to a product. Before the product is declared fit for use in health care, it must be free from defects. According to Laporte and April (2018), quality assurance ensures that a product is defect-free and meets expectations and the expected quality standards. To a large extent, quality assurance is a process-based technique to avoid any rework on the deliverables. It can also be viewed as a proactive intervention that focuses on planning and following guidelines to guarantee product quality by comparing results, requirements, and expectations.
System testing methodology is also an approach to improve quality, although its focus area is different. The method involves testing the entire system to ensure that it is free from bugs and errors that can hamper the quality. In most cases, system testing involves interfacing the software and hardware components to check functionality. The hardware and software components are usually tested separately, followed by their integration and testing the combined component as a unit.
In conclusion, healthcare organizations’ IT department remains a critical segment that profoundly influences organizational success. An organization cannot meet the desired health outcomes if the IT department is not efficient as expected. The interview with the program developer revealed a lot about project management methodologies and the skills required in completing IT projects successfully. Quality assurance emerged as a critical process in project success since the product should always be free from defects. As nurses continue being involved in data handling, they should possess the essential skills to enable them to excel in project management to enhance health outcomes.

Topic 1 DQ 1

What would spirituality be according to your own worldview? How do you believe that your conception of spirituality would influence the way in which you care for patients?

Spirituality is a broad concept with different perspectives from diverse people. Spirituality is important in human life, as it is considered both a motivating and harmonizing force. Further, spirituality is a difficult and multidimensional part of individuals’ life as an inner belief system. According to Polat and Ozdemir (2022), spirituality is an aspect of humanity that includes how people seek and express their meaning and purpose, and the way individuals experience connectedness to self, the moment, nature, others, and the sacred. Further, spirituality can be described as a set of beliefs that bring liveliness and meaning to the actions of life (Dewi & Hamzah, 2019). This indicates that spirituality is a significant dimension of people’s quality of life. Following the various descriptions of spirituality, spirituality can be described as seeking and expressing a meaningful connection with something greater than oneself, and a purpose of one’s existence to experience inner peace, love, hope, support, and comfort.

As nurses strive to provide holistic care to patients, spirituality influences nurses to address the spiritual needs of the patients. With spirituality being a key component in health and healing, spirituality influences nurses to lessen patients’ anxieties, provide hope, and empower patients to achieve inner peace by providing appropriate coping mechanisms and counseling during stressful situations. Nurses apply spiritual care to address patients’ needs of the spirit when they experience disease, fears, concerns, and sorrow (Polat & Ozdemir, 2022). Further spirituality influences nurses to provide therapeutic approaches that are based on compassionate relationships (Polat & Ozdemir, 2022). Spirituality allows nurses to care for the human spirit by developing caring and safe relationships and interconnectedness with patients to support spiritual well-being and health. Thus, spirituality is essential in nursing care.
