Topic 1 DQ 2

Refer to the consensus report of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Health Equity, provided in the topic ResourcesIdentify recommendations for nursing education you believe will be most effective or radical in creating change within the industry. Provide rationale based on your experience in practice. Do you agree or disagree with how the report describes the evolution of the advanced practice registered nurse role? Why or why not?

The consensus report of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine, The Future of Nursing 2020-2030: Charting a Path to Achieve Equity, is a report that outlines recommendations for improving patient care and achieving health equity. Some of the recommendations for nursing education can be key in causing desired change within the industry. Two of the recommendations are recommendation three, which revolves around promoting nurses’ well-being and health, and the eighth recommendation, which revolves around enabling nurses to address iniquities within communities by strengthening and protecting the workforce (Wakefield et al., 2021, pg 370).

Among the key focuses of nursing is improved patient care and ensuring that patients are safe in the care environment (Wei et al., 2018, pg 288). These can better be achieved by promoting the well-being and health of the nurses as they take on new roles to help advance health equity. Promoting their well-being and health will make nurses feel more valued and hence improve and work towards offering the patients the best. Recommendation eight is also more likely to cause notable change and improvements. It is important to address inequities within communities by strengthening and protecting the nursing workforce during emergencies such as natural disasters and pandemics (Wakefield et al, pg. 377). This recommendation became more relevant to me during the Covid-19 pandemic, where the organization made no efforts to ensure our safety since sometimes the nurses found it difficult to even access vital supplies. The management was at a distance, and the nurses felt neglected. As such, fulfilling the requirements stated in this recommendation will go along the way in ensuring that inequities are eliminated.

I agree with how the report describes the evolution of the advanced practice registered nurse role. From the report, it is recommended that the nurses should be allowed to practice to the full extent of their education as well as training. This is to be achieved by eliminating the practice barriers preventing them from practice and ensuring that they appropriately address the social determinants of health and social needs to enhance healthcare value, quality and access. Addressing the social determinants of health are all key to better patient outcomes (Hill-Briggs et al., 2021, pg 259).

The report that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) published in 2001 was information that was attempting to depict how the health system should have planned for its improvement. One of the six subjects that was inadvertently pushed aside was equity. There is inequity in health care. “Social determinants of health (SDOH) as defined by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Centers for Disease Control) are the conditions in which people live, learn, work, and play that are determined by the distribution of money, power, and resources and that affect a wide range of health and quality of-life risks and outcomes” (Macias-Konstantopoulos et al., 2023, p. 907). The health care field is not a level playing field. Insurance has a major influence unfortunately. There is a great push from the administrative staff to make sure that all the paperwork is correctly filled out to get the hospital its money. So yes, the hospital is a business, but it becomes overshadowed by the politics of reassuring that some form of payment is also filed in the patient’s profile as well.

When the healthcare professional has direct patient contact, then they should not have to think about any sort of money exchange. Their focus is improving the patient’s current health care status. Providing health equity should be a given. Having worked in a county hospital, I was able to see how patients were obviously in the hospital because they were unfortunately the ones without insurance and also more so the ones who did not receive preventative care. Therefor they are now in worse shape than they would have been if they had received preventative care to begin with. The evolution of the advanced practice registered nurse will greatly benefit those who require preventative care but are just out of reach of the physician’s care. Having the option to seek care prior to desperately needing care would be extremely beneficial to the patient and extremely cost effective to the health care system.

Lopes Write Policy

For assignments that need to be submitted to Lopes Write, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.

Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.

Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?

Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.

Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted.

If you think you would be needing accommodations due to any reasons, please contact the appropriate department to request accommodations.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
