For example, when researching surveillance for HIV, I learned that the CDC collects and analyzes information regarding HIV routinely and puts it in a report called Data to Care. The past eight weeks have been filled with information and challenged me to think in ways that I never had before. In eight short weeks, we have learned an abundance of information that is preparing us to meet MSN program outcomes and Nurse Practitioner core competencies.

The MSN program outcome number two is to create a caring environment for achieving care-focused, quality health outcomes. Epidemiology is the science of applying the best available research evidence to patient care (Young, Naude, Brodovcky, & Esterhuizen, 2017). In other words, it is the study of disease incidence, prevalence, distribution, control, immunity, and other factors of health. Diseases can be tracked and monitored to hopefully control the spread, leading to better patient outcomes and disease prevention. Learning/reading about epidemiology and the weekly discussion post have taught us about health outcomes in a learning-driven environment.

The MSN essential IV is about translating and integrating scholarship into practice. The goal of an advanced-practice nurse is to apply research outcomes within the practice setting, to resolve problems, to work as a change agent, and to disseminate results. We fulfilled this essential when we wrote our papers and discussion posts about diseases in our practice area, how they spread, how to test for them, surveillance of disease, and how they can be controlled. After taking this course I realized that Epidemiology is one of the most important disciplines within public health. Its function is the systematic study of the distribution of diseases and their trends in the population and the factors that contribute to their increase or decrease (WHO, 2018). It is through epidemiology that the health system can design better ways to prevent, detect and treat diseases and disabilities. This last eight weeks have been an awesome experience and has greatly increased my knowledge on health epidemiology.  I learned about epidemiology and the distribution of diseases in populations, including its application to nursing practice. I learned about some of the important key terms that are associated with health epidemiology and was able to apply them into our discussions. The weekly discussions and epidemiology papers has allowed me to gain insight about many population health issues. I also learned about measurements of health risk, odds ratio, relative risk, and evidence of risk. We learned how to measure health riskand evaluate a public health problem.  I have also learned about passive and active surveillance, their difference and their importance in epidemiology.  This course has also provided me with the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to carry out research aimed at studying the distribution of diseases in the population and determine factors associated with that distribution. Moreover, this gain knowledge will help me address monitoring population health, evaluating delivery of care, and promoting optimal healthcare outcome. I will apply everything that I learned from this class in my future practice as an FNP. My main goal is to serve my community as an advance nurse and to be a good resource/mentor to my community to help them achieve a better health.
