Professional Associations Membership

Professional nursing organizations have a critical role in establishing and building energy, ideas, and have a proactive approach to issues that impact healthcare in general and nursing in particular. These associations provide a platform for nurses to advocate for their needs and welfare as well as those of their clients. Subscribing to these professional nursing organizations offers one a platform to enhance their education, get certification opportunities and enhance role-associated competences (Villeneuve & Betker, 2020). The essence of this paper is to discuss the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) as a professional organization related to my area of specialty.

I appreciate your post and thoughtful points. Nurses should have a voice in politics because we are in the trenches and since we are firsthand witnesses have the best voice to not only policies that will affect nursing and healthcare but also to patient care. Haidrani (2017) interviewed a nurse practitioner who has been involved in policy making changes and she reports that it not only has increased the vision of nurses but has expanded her view as well. True initially when entering into this foreign world of politics it may seem difficult but there is no better way to learn than to get into the thick of it. Nurses have a duty to advocate for patients and nurses (and healthcare) alike.

Description of the AANP

The American Nurses Association (ANA) posits that nurses need professional development as part of the lifelong learning where they engage in enhancing and maintaining their competence, professional nursing practice and getting support to attain their personal career goals. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is a professional nursing organization for nurses who specialize as practitioners in different areas of scope in nursing care. With a membership of over 119,000 nurses across the nation, AANP comprise of all NPs and NP students and individuals or entities that are interested in the NP practice and role (Mlambo et al., 2021). The association works to enhance patient care and advancement of the NP practice.

AANP’s mission is to empower all NPs to improve quality health care in their practice, through advanced education, advocacy, research, and healthcare leadership.

The leadership in the association comprises nurse practitioners who volunteer their resources to ascertain that NPs, their patients and health populations have a voice when important health care issues arise. Being a member of the AANP offers one immense benefits that include access to research works, training, seminars and conferences about emerging nursing and healthcare trends (AANP, 2020). AANP is a proactive organization that advocates for NPs in different ways. These include the need to remove barriers and ensure that patients can secure full and direct access to NP services. The association has an advocacy center that allows it to champion for members’ issues at the federal level. The center has advocacy resources for members to learn and understand different aspects of advocacy at both state and federal levels.

Importance of Networking

Nurse practitioners are a critical component of effective care delivery. Networking helps nurse practitioners to expand their social and professional network and get colleagues who have similar perspectives and wish to enhance their professional abilities (Collins et al., 2021). Professional networking enables nurses to explore their specialties and the nursing field in general as they establish and develop strong support system within the healthcare community. Networking allows NPs and nursing graduates to get new opportunities and positions, discover new specialties and share their knowledge, research findings and best practices defining the nursing profession, especially the use of innovative models like evidence-based practice (EBP) to enhance patient care quality (Collins et al., 2021). Professional networking allows one to get new jobs and find their niche in the labor market as nurse practitioners.

Nursing organizations create networking opportunities for their members to enhance their professional development and attainment of career goals. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) creates numerous opportunities for its members to network through conferences and seminars. The association holds a national nursing convention each year to allow nurses to interact and attain more knowledge about the professional and the healthcare system (AANP, 2020). AANP is a leading specialty organization with members in different parts of the country and enables them to meet through its partners as it collaborates with corporations and other organizations to ensure that the over 325,000 NPs licensed to practice enhance health outcomes for their patients (AANP, 2020). These collaborations and partnerships are essential networking opportunities for the association’s members to gather information and enhance their professional development.

Keeping Members Informed

Professional organizations and associations play a critical role in informing their members about health care changes and practice changes that impact their specialty areas. AANP is a well-established and organized entity that conducts a host of activities to ensure that its members are informed about the transformation and changes occurring in the health care. The association collaborate with different federal bodies or agencies to ensure that it participates in policy development and implementation focused on improving healthcare outcomes (Price & Reichert, 2017). The association provides resources to its members that include research evidence and findings about best practices in the specialty to inform them about changes in practice. The association also encourages its members to participate in research studies to attain new knowledge and be informed about the most appropriate care interventions to enhance quality of care provided to patients.

Participation in policy making and implementation provides nurse practitioners the chance to understand and advocate changes in healthcare industry. As such, the association is an active advocacy agency and through these efforts, nurse practitioners get the chance to be informed about changing nature of the healthcare provision across care continuum.

Opportunities for Continuing Education and Professional Development

Nursing professional entails lifelong learning and professional development as captured by the Institute of Medicine’s report in 2010. Therefore, nurse practitioners must embrace opportunities to continue their education and embrace professional development as effective ways of enhancing quality of care they offer to patients in different care settings. The association offers its members opportunities for advanced education since it is a specialty organization implying that continual membership requires one to enhance their level of education (AANP, 2020). The association values professional development and encourages NPs to keep high standards of care by improving their practice competence, especially through cultural competency and application of evidence-based practice interventions to attain patient-centered care.  The association also offers opportunities for continuous education and professional development through provision of resources like journals and publications to members.

Conclusion

Professional nursing associations like the AANP play a critical role in the development of nurses to attain highest level of competence and expertise aimed at providing quality care. Joining these associations provides members with immense opportunities, especially in professional and career development. The organization also champions issues affecting practice authority for nurses in different states through legislation at state and federal levels.

Advocacy is a critical part of the daily practice for nurses in different care settings and when dealing with diverse patients. Nurses are the most trusted professionals and this gives them an upper hand in advocating for patients in different situation. Therefore, advocacy is essential as it allows nurses to improve their interactions and levels of trust with patients. Advocacy also helps nurses to deliver safe and quality care to patients through interventions to reduce medication errors, and prevent falls among other adverse events (Chiu et al., 2021). Advocacy allows nurses to focus on and support the interests of patients, help them make decisions and improve their overall care experience. Nurses as the closest professionals to patients have a duty to advance patients’ health and welfare. Nurses learn patient preferences and values, needs and concerns and can support their decisions based on their situations.

As a patient advocate, a nurse’s roles include providing sufficient information to patients, protecting patient’s interests and preferences, working as the mediator between the patient and their families and the healthcare team that includes physicians and other care providers (Abbasinia et al., 2020). Again, nurses’ role in patient advocacy entails working closely with the patient and their family to develop interventions that mirror their values and preferences in care provision.

Situations exist for nurses to be involved with patient advocacy. For instance, there was a situation where I had to intervene on behalf of a patient who could not express himself well to the physician during the normal ward rounds. The patient had had a long night due to the effects of the medications that he was taking. As such, the physician was almost agitated when he failed to answer certain questions. I intervened and gave the physician all details as shared by the night shift nurse in the present of the patient and noted in his medical history (Schmidt & McArthur, 2018). The advocacy efforts allowed the patient to have his medications changed and perhaps have better outcomes. Without the advocacy, it could have been difficult for the physician and patient to agree on the concerns that he had and required addressed.

For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
