Qualitative Study on Violence Against Nurses in the Workplace
Violence against nurses in the workplace is a critical challenge in the healthcare and leads to high turnover, nurse shortage and poor patient outcomes and experiences (Hassankhani et al., 2018). Conducting a qualitative study about violence against nurses in their practice areas entails one making an informed decision based on the choice of method, the implementation and application. The implication is that carrying out the study would involve multiple steps between data collection and analysis to get new perspectives and experiences. Therefore, it will entail formulation of a research question, selection of research design, collection of data and data analysis and reporting. The selection of research design informs the type of data collection of methods (Henderson et al., 2018). Qualitative analysis mirrors a different underlying paradigm and choice made based on underlying substantive model
or theoretical approach.
Workplace violence in healthcare entities can cause serious effects that can have negative impacts on providers’ lives
and patient care. Therefore, a qualitative research design that allows for in-depth understanding of the problem is the most appropriate for researching the issue (Bahadir-Yilmaz & Kurşun, 2020). As such, to investigate the issue well, the research will employ case studies approach. Case studies allow the researcher to focus on how and why, the observation of the behavior and not manipulation, and wants to further understand the problem of violence against nurse. The design also allows a researcher to apply multiple methods in collecting data that include interviews, observation and historical documentation.
Data analysis is essential in attaining understanding of a phenomenon in nursing research. The analysis will entail preparing data, coding it and entering it into a computer before using a statistical method to understand and interpret it. The most appropriate data analysis approach in this case would be diagnostic data analysis. The method allows research analysts to gain firm contextual understanding of the issue of violence against nurses, especially the causes and potential remedies (Busetto et al., 2020). The analytical method is designed to offer direct and actionable answers to certain questions.
