Reflection

I learned a number of things on the roles of the nurse and advanced practice nurse as an activist for the LGBT populations. One of the things that I learned is the fact that the nurse and advanced practice nurse plays the roles of advocates in working with the LGBTQ populations. They ensure the protection of their needs and rights in their societies. They also ensure that they have enhanced access to and utilization of the care services (Caceres, 2019). The nurse and advanced practice nurse also engage in health promotion activities for the LGBTQ populations. They educate them about the importance of living healthy lives and utilizing services such as screening to promote their health (Maruca et al., 2018). Some problems were encountered while working with the LGBTQ population. One of them was their low level of participation in activities that contribute to their wellbeing. There was also the issue of low level of knowledge among them about their health needs and ways of achieving them. The last problem was the social isolation of the LGBTQ in the society due to their identity.

You will find important health information regarding minority groups by exploring the following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) links:

One of the things that I might have done differently was involving other healthcare providers and policymakers in

the process. The involvement of the multidisciplinary and inter-professional teams could have increased the inclusiveness of the interventions adopted as well as the acceptance rate of the policies. The other thing that I could have done differently was undertaking needs analysis. Needs analysis would have enabled the identification of the actual and potential problems that the LGBTQ population faces. I will apply the knowledge gained as a future APRN in advocating the adoption of inclusive policies in health. I will also advocate the adoption of policies that address the barriers to care for the minority populations in the society (Gahagan & Colpitts, 2017). I will also use the knowledge to explore practical and evidence-based interventions that can be used to promote the health and wellbeing of the diverse populations.
