How to Research and Prepare for  NUR 513 Identify a population that you will likely serve as an advanced registered nurse that you think is particularly vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity

Whether one passes or fails an academic assignment such as the Grand Canyon University NUR 513 Identify a population that you will likely serve as an advanced registered nurse that you think is particularly vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity depends on the preparation done beforehand. The first thing to do once you receive an assignment is to quickly skim through the requirements. Once that is done, start going through the instructions one by one to clearly understand what the instructor wants. The most important thing here is to understand the required format—whether it is APA, MLA, Chicago, etc.

After understanding the requirements of the paper, the next phase is to gather relevant materials. The first place to start the research process is the weekly resources. Go through the resources provided in the instructions to determine which ones fit the assignment. After reviewing the provided resources, use the university library to search for additional resources. After gathering sufficient and necessary resources, you are now ready to start drafting your paper.

How to Write the Introduction for  NUR 513 Identify a population that you will likely serve as an advanced registered nurse that you think is particularly vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity

The introduction for the Grand Canyon University NUR 513 Identify a population that you will likely serve as an advanced registered nurse that you think is particularly vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity is where you tell the instructor what your paper will encompass. In three to four statements, highlight the important points that will form the basis of your paper. Here, you can include statistics to show the importance of the topic you will be discussing. At the end of the introduction, write a clear purpose statement outlining what exactly will be contained in the paper. This statement will start with “The purpose of this paper…” and then proceed to outline the various sections of the instructions.

How to Write the Body for  NUR 513 Identify a population that you will likely serve as an advanced registered nurse that you think is particularly vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity

After the introduction, move into the main part of the  NUR 513 Identify a population that you will likely serve as an advanced registered nurse that you think is particularly vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity assignment, which is the body. Carefully examine the rubric, as it will contain all the detailed requirements of the assignment. Sometimes, the rubric will have information that the normal instructions lack.

Another important factor to consider at this point is how to do citations. In-text citations are fundamental as they support the arguments and points you make in the paper. At this point, the resources gathered at the beginning will come in handy. Integrating the ideas of the authors with your own will ensure that you produce a comprehensive paper. Also, follow the given citation format. In most cases, APA 7 is the preferred format for nursing assignments.

In my small rural community, there are a lot of elderly people experiencing health inequity and health disparities. Due to the current nursing shortage, home healthcare agencies are limited in how many families they can care for leaving chronic illnesses unmanaged. With no long-term care facilities within miles of the area, families are left with the stress of who is going to look after their family members until their final days. There are many issues causing health disparities within the current United States healthcare system. Insufficient insurance coverage, rising healthcare costs, and widening disparity in access to healthcare services have adversely affected the elderly population, and today, healthcare costs are generating major problems for welfare states in the short-term and long term (Yamada et al., 2015). According to Yamada et al., (2015) one of the major concerns creating health disparities with the elderly population is the rising cost of healthcare services in the United States. Many elderly patients have neglected to seek care due to the fear that insurance will not cover the service, and they will be unable to afford care. With the increasing costs of healthcare here in the United States, patients have neglected to follow up with outpatient treatment leading to an increased rate of hospital readmissions for chronic conditions such as COPD, and Congestive Heart Failure.

Utilizing my specialty as a nurse educator, the main focus of eliminating the disparities that this population faces would be to develop and instruct better educational methods and programs for better outpatient care within the home. First, nurses need to be aware of implicit bias or stereotypical assumptions about patients with different backgrounds, and nurses must invite and support all patients’ participation in all aspects of care, irrespective of patients’ levels of education, language, or racial or ethnic backgrounds or clinical characteristics (Oruche & Zapolski, 2020). According to Oruche and Zapolski (2020), healthcare agencies must employ an educational system that is more patient-centered. For example, applauding patients for making it to appointments, and working collaboratively to increase access to healthcare and prevent disparities. Within the Christian worldview, everyone regardless of race, socioeconomic status, and inability to pay should be allowed to receive the same access to healthcare as anyone else. Educating the client one-on-one allows us to give them the information to succeed and flourish within the society that God has created during his time on this earth so that they may help one another and treat others to live out their lives with dignity and respect. Our main job is to promote human beings to be successful outside the healthcare facility to grow and prosper through our healing powers for strength.

NUR 513 Identify a population that you will likely serve as an advanced registered nurse that you think is particularly vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity

Assessment Description

Identify a population that you will likely serve as an advanced registered nurse that you think is particularly vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity. Discuss the contribution of your particular specialty to health promotion and disease prevention for this population. How do issues of diversity and global perspectives of care contribute to your understanding of health equity as it relates to this population?

In my current hospital facility, we see several from the under-served population. The issue of homelessness is huge for this group. These individuals are usually not focused on being proactive with their health. They are focused on the basics such as food and shelter. When we end up meeting this population, they have illnesses and diseases that have progressed. It is now much more difficult and time-consuming than what it would be if the health issue had been addressed much sooner. “Representing more than 20% of the public health workforce, Public Health Nurses (PHNs) use their expertise and unique skill set to promote and protect the health of the communities and populations they serve” (Schaer, 2022, p. 678). By becoming a Public Health Nurse, I know that I will be able to reach this vulnerable population and assist in educating them to further reduce the possibility of reaching admission to a hospital. I will be diverting these individuals by assisting them by improving their diets and any current medication and more importantly answering any questions that they have about their health. I will also have resources that are available to them so that they can also address the issues of meeting their basic needs as well as continue to improve their health status.

As a nurse educator, I will most likely be pursuing an instructor position for nursing students. Students can be particularly vulnerable to health disparities and/or inequities. Nursing school is no easy task, and the teaching about selfcare and daily health habits must be incorporated into the curriculum for optimal performance within the classroom and clinical settings. Facilitating learning in a healthy environment can help set up the nursing student with a positive vantage point to pursue high quality patient care.

The nurse educator helps encourage and lead nursing students through their rigorous journey of learning the art of nursing.  As a team, the nurse educator and student care for patients in many different areas of nursing specialties. Exposure to a multitude of health disparities and/or inequities has a significant impact on the nursing student’s perception and recognition of the community’s wellbeing and unique needs. These experiences may help the students critically think about what their individual journey and specific passions as a nurse will develop into.

Homelessness is one of the main inequities I have witnessed throughout my journey as nurse. It is crucial for the nurse educator to cultivate respect and consideration for health disparities within the nursing students’ clinical experiences. Addressing underlying causes of the circumstances and providing therapeutic touch and communication can create as sense of hope and renewed perseverance within this displaced population. Creating a focus surrounding the different resources and solutions to help with the situation can initiate positive change and create opportunities of progress towards prosperity (Flaubert, 2021).

The majority of the homeless population has often times experienced problems with mental illness, trauma, substance abuse, and impoverished living.  The nature of society and the social policies that influence levels of household income classes lead to harmful stigmas and roadblocks associated with decreased chances of success and achievements for the underdog. Strengthening policy development and supporting community outreach initiatives can help with this severely underserved community (Institute of Global Homelessness, 2019).

A population that I will likely serve as an advanced registered nurse that is particularly vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity is the lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, queer/questioning (LBGTQ+) community. As a nurse educator, I anticipate instructing a diverse group of students of various ethnic backgrounds, races, ages, and gender identities. In the US, transgender, and gender diverse (TGD) people are more likely to experience mental health disorders, be diagnosed with HIV or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and use tobacco products compared to cisgender people, which as a result, has been associated with reports of incongruent care and biases among health care workers (Sherman et al., 2021).

Nurses are often the first point of care for those seeking medical assistance and encompass the largest population in the healthcare environment (Sherman et al., 2021). My duty as a nurse educator is to openly accept all students including those that identify as gender diverse and provide adequate knowledge and training in all areas of health inequities. Consequently, one way to alleviate the stigma and discrimination that gender non-conforming individuals report experiencing in healthcare settings is to investigate the education and preparation of nurses in cultural humility and TGD-specific health information (Sherman et al., 2021).

I believe that education is the first step in understanding what is unfamiliar, which may then lead to a form of acceptance. Being a nurse means setting aside prejudice and bigotry to uphold your commitment to providing the best possible care to those in your charge.

Psychiatric-mental health nurse, the population I serve is vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity due to the nature of their illness. The illness of the population often is associated with the following factors:

socioeconomic

limited access to care

cultural differences

sexual orientation, etc

The socioeconomic factors have been linked to suicide, but little research has explored the effects of these determinants on suicide risk in US populations (DeBastiani et al., 2019).

In this population, most of the patients are of African American background with a record of more than five million (17.3 percent) (Murray, 2022) with limited education and access to quality health care in comparison to their Caucasian counterparts. In addressing the problems, an APRN needs to first and foremost create awareness of these issues, educate, and improve access to health care services for this vulnerable population. These are and will continue to be my specialty to health promotion and disease prevention for this population.

The Christian worldview principle strives for equality, that all humans are created in God’s image, equal, and should be treated with the principle of justice, compassion, and helping one another especially, those in need/vulnerable. Mental illness is a stigma among the patients which is why the population needs ultimate support, reduced stigma, education, and encouraging open communication to foster early intervention are some effective measures in preventing mental health issues.

Homicidal and suicide prevention is the focus of this population which involves strategies like access to treatment, access to resources, healthy lifestyle like balanced nutrition, exercise, sufficient sleep, reduced stress, housing, financial stability, good relationships, connection to a healthcare professional, and social connections. Advocating social justice, educating, and reducing stigma, and individual treatment plans are crucial in promoting and preventing social among the mental health population. As reported in their article, Erlangsen et al., (2023) that dedicated interventions are needed to achieve significant suicide reduction. Factor impacting representation of this population is their unwillingness to participate in research and with understanding that cognitive behavioral therapy is a commonly used evidence-based treatment ((Murray, 2022).

Understanding that people with mental health challenges face difficulties because of their illness is important. Factors like money, getting to a doctor, cultural differences, and sexual orientation make their situation harder. Research shows a link between money issues and the risk of suicide, and more research is needed in the US. Your commitment to raising awareness, teaching, and making it easier for them to get healthcare matches the idea of treating everyone equally, which is part of the Christian way of thinking. Believing that everyone is made in God’s image and deserves fair treatment shows compassion and support, especially for those who are struggling. The stigma around mental illness in this group shows why they need strong support, less judgment, learning, and talking openly. These actions not only help prevent mental health problems but also follow the Christian idea of helping each other, especially those who need it. Your focus on keeping this group healthy considers not just medical stuff but also the social and cultural things that can make mental health harder for them.

To add on this topic, the way Christians see the world is more than just a religious belief. It’s like a complete and connected way of understanding everything around us. It’s based on ideas from the Bible. So, when Christians look at the world, they should see it as a whole, with different parts all connected by biblical ideas. Every Christian is advised to look at their daily life through the ideas in the Bible, seeing the world as a connected system of beliefs and values (Randall, 2010).

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
