A population that I will likely serve as an advanced registered nurse that is particularly vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity is the lesbian, bisexual, gay, transgender, queer/questioning (LBGTQ+) community. As a nurse educator, I anticipate instructing a diverse group of students of various ethnic backgrounds, races, ages, and gender identities. In the US, transgender, and gender diverse (TGD) people are more likely to experience mental health disorders, be diagnosed with HIV or other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and use tobacco products compared to cisgender people, which as a result, has been associated with reports of incongruent care and biases among health care workers (Sherman et al., 2021).

Nurses are often the first point of care for those seeking medical assistance and encompass the largest population in the healthcare environment (Sherman et al., 2021). My duty as a nurse educator is to openly accept all students including those that identify as gender diverse and provide adequate knowledge and training in all areas of health inequities. Consequently, one way to alleviate the stigma and discrimination that gender non-conforming individuals report experiencing in healthcare settings is to investigate the education and preparation of nurses in cultural humility and TGD-specific health information (Sherman et al., 2021).

I believe that education is the first step in understanding what is unfamiliar, which may then lead to a form of acceptance. Being a nurse means setting aside prejudice and bigotry to uphold your commitment to providing the best possible care to those in your charge.

Psychiatric-mental health nurse, the population I serve is vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity due to the nature of their illness. The illness of the population often is associated with the following factors:

socioeconomic

limited access to care

cultural differences

sexual orientation, etc

The socioeconomic factors have been linked to suicide, but little research has explored the effects of these determinants on suicide risk in US populations (DeBastiani et al., 2019).

In this population, most of the patients are of African American background with a record of more than five million (17.3 percent) (Murray, 2022) with limited education and access to quality health care in comparison to their Caucasian counterparts. In addressing the problems, an APRN needs to first and foremost create awareness of these issues, educate, and improve access to health care services for this vulnerable population. These are and will continue to be my specialty to health promotion and disease prevention for this population.

 

The Christian worldview principle strives for equality, that all humans are created in God’s image, equal, and should be treated with the principle of justice, compassion, and helping one another especially, those in need/vulnerable. Mental illness is a stigma among the patients which is why the population needs ultimate support, reduced stigma, education, and encouraging open communication to foster early intervention are some effective measures in preventing mental health issues.

 

Homicidal and suicide prevention is the focus of this population which involves strategies like access to treatment, access to resources, healthy lifestyle like balanced nutrition, exercise, sufficient sleep, reduced stress, housing, financial stability, good relationships, connection to a healthcare professional, and social connections. Advocating social justice, educating, and reducing stigma, and individual treatment plans are crucial in promoting and preventing social among the mental health population. As reported in their article, Erlangsen et al., (2023) that dedicated interventions are needed to achieve significant suicide reduction. Factor impacting representation of this population is their unwillingness to participate in research and with understanding that cognitive behavioral therapy is a commonly used evidence-based treatment ((Murray, 2022).

Understanding that people with mental health challenges face difficulties because of their illness is important. Factors like money, getting to a doctor, cultural differences, and sexual orientation make their situation harder. Research shows a link between money issues and the risk of suicide, and more research is needed in the US. Your commitment to raising awareness, teaching, and making it easier for them to get healthcare matches the idea of treating everyone equally, which is part of the Christian way of thinking. Believing that everyone is made in God’s image and deserves fair treatment shows compassion and support, especially for those who are struggling. The stigma around mental illness in this group shows why they need strong support, less judgment, learning, and talking openly. These actions not only help prevent mental health problems but also follow the Christian idea of helping each other, especially those who need it. Your focus on keeping this group healthy considers not just medical stuff but also the social and cultural things that can make mental health harder for them.

To add on this topic, the way Christians see the world is more than just a religious belief. It’s like a complete and connected way of understanding everything around us. It’s based on ideas from the Bible. So, when Christians look at the world, they should see it as a whole, with different parts all connected by biblical ideas. Every Christian is advised to look at their daily life through the ideas in the Bible, seeing the world as a connected system of beliefs and values (Randall, 2010).

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us.
