DQ1 Are there professional barriers to being involved with the legislative process, such as retaliation from institutions or individuals who do not share your same viewpoints? What steps would you take to ensure you can represent the advanced registered nurse as a leader and patient advocate under these types of circumstances?

For health care organizations, health care policy does not only include national or state legislation but also organizational policies. Some policies are enforced through the law while others are organization and human resource requirements that may result in disciplinary actions for non-compliance. The policy process is never-ending as the health care needs and roles change. As the largest group in healthcare, nurses are well-positioned to provide input into the process of policy-making (Weberg, 2019).

Health care policy issues in the US are currently focused on the scope of practice of service providers, especially the APRNs, quality of care, cost-effectiveness, access to care, ethical issues, information technology, coordination of care, fraud, and abuse. All of these focus issues will greatly affect and determine changes in organizational policies and health care outcomes (Weberg, 2019).

Clinical leaders can actively advocate for patient care and promote the nurses’ perspective in health care policy issues by engaging in state and national legislation discussions through professional organizations or committees involved in legislative advocacy. This will also increase the clinical leaders’ competency in policy-making and development as well as participating in evidence-based policy discussions, proposing new policies, evaluating current policies, and increasing clinical nurse leaders’ presence in policy-making discussions at a state or national level through participating in resources available like the news media or publication (Weberg, 2019).

The common understanding of accountability is one in which a governing body (e.g., government, regional health authority, healthcare board, professional association) is in a position to mandate providers or organizations to meet certain goals or objectives. Denis (2014) posits that a culture of accountability in healthcare improves doctor-patient trust, reduces the misuse of resources, and helps organizations provide better quality care. With accountability comes responsibility. Responsibility is the obligation to perform duties, tasks, or roles using sound professional judgment and being answerable for the decisions made. On the other hand, risk refers to the chance or likelihood that something will harm or otherwise affect a patient’s health or a healthcare organization’s effectiveness.

DQ2 Chapter 14 in the textbook, Leadership in Nursing Practice: Changing the Landscape of Health Care, discusses the nursing profession’s lack of representation in health care policymaking, even though nurses currently represent the largest profession within the health care industry. The text suggests that this may be related to gender inequality, with women making up a large percentage of the nursing profession. Do you see any correlation to this argument?

Health care policy affects every nurse’s daily practice, and determines who gets what type of health services, when, how, from whom and at what cost, therefore, the study of health policy is very important in professional nursing (Perez et al., 2020).

As advanced practice nurses, some strategies that can be implemented to increase participation in health care policymaking includes knowing about current issues, providing testimonies, writing letters to publication editors, participate in community and professional activities, build coalitions, contact policymakers, conduct research to create evidence, shape policy with evidence, lobby key individuals, join influential groups or organizations, identify policy problems and propose solutions, publish articles, serve on board, and volunteer on campaigns (Perez et al., 2020).

Joining a professional organization that is actively involved in policy advocacy that I am interested in and whose position statement is in alignment with my values and beliefs would be a very good start. I have participated in a number of policy advocacy campaigns before with issues that directly affected the health care workers and patients in my specialty. We got to speak with the lawmakers to state and justify our position statements. We also did some lobbying and several campaigns in different cities. We also submitted self-recorded videos of testimonies and encouraged our patients to also submit their own testimonies. We wrote letters to our representatives declaring our position statements on health care issues. As an advanced practice nurse and clinical leader, I want to continue doing the same, and be one of the people in the forefront of these advocacy activities.

Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.

In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.

Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).

Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.

APA Format and Writing Quality

Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).

Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.

I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.

Use of Direct Quotes

I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.

As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.

It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.

Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.

Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.

If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.

I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.

As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

Communication

Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:

Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.

Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
