I’ve decided to pursue a career as a psychiatric/mental health nurse practitioner. After 28 years of working as a mental nurse, I made the decision to advance my career. The peer-reviewed article used is entitled. “How PMHNP Program Directors Facilitate Psychotherapeutic Skill Acquisition by the authors Wesemann, Convoy, Goldstein, and Melino. I looked for this article by typing “PMHNP” into the Walden library tab. Next, I selected the “peer-reviewed” link on the left and entered the keyword “psychotherapeutic,” I then restricted my search. A list of articles from the Thoreau/EBSCO search engine appeared, and I chose this particular one.

Finding this peer-reviewed article was not difficult for me. The library database at Walden University is quite trustworthy. Yes, I would recommend this database, because it is accessible, and the full articles are available for usage. “A good database should begin with valuable metadata and data”, (Siyavula. n.d.). Criteria used for selecting a good database is using one that is a reliable monitoring and alerting system, (Guo, 2022). This database will be very helpful to my colleagues for the reasons stated above. My search was able to be limited by a large number of alternatives. The Walden library’s EBSCO database has excellent themes and a big selection of articles, therefore I would definitely recommend it.

The study included only hemodialysis patients diagnosed with depressive symptoms and may not be generalized to patients with comorbid depression from other conditions (Ling et al., 2020).  The article investigates the impact of using CBT in patients with depressive symptoms.   Depressive symptoms improve with CBT. 

CBT seems more effective than usual care in improving depression. 

The article presents a summary of findings from various RCTs which enable the reader to take into account a wide range of relevant findings from research on the specific topic (Ling et al., 2020).  The systematic review included six studies and a small sample size, which limits its generalization.  The study establishes  that CBT improves depressive symptoms and quality of life.    CBT is an effective therapy in patients with depressive symptoms. 
 

 

Self-reported questionnaires were used to measure depression and quality of life, which may result in bias (Ling et al., 2020).  The study reveals a valuable effect of CBT on depressive symptoms and quality of life when compared to usual care and non-directive counseling.  CBT should be recommended in clinical management of patients with comorbid depression.   
 

 

The quality of the reviewed RCTs was varied, which lowers the strength of the conclusion.

Peer review entails the evaluation of scientific or academic work by experts from a specific field. My first step when looking for and analyzing a peer-reviewed article involves examining whether the article is published by a scholarly journal (Behzadi & Gajdács, 2020). I then assess if the article has an abstract and subheadings, including background, literature review, methods, findings, conclusion, and recommendations. I also examine if the article has cited its source and included a reference list of the cited sources (Behzadi & Gajdács, 2020). In addition, I examine whether it contains the authors’ credentials with affiliations of a university or research institute. I read the article to determine if it focuses on generating knowledge on the research area of interest.   

           Effective strategies in identifying peer-reviewed research include using the library database and limiting the search to only peer-reviewed articles. Most of the databases are limited to scholarly publications, making finding a peer-reviewed article easy (Behzadi & Gajdács, 2020). I have also found Google Scholar as an effective tool to obtain peer-reviewed articles. Google Scholar allows one to search articles by scholar preferences, navigate to articles related to the topic, and identify how often other researchers have cited the article. I purpose to use the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) to find peer-reviewed research articles. CDSR is the leading database for systematic reviews in health care. It seeks to find, appraise and synthesize the empirical evidence that meets the eligibility criteria to answer specific research questions. 

Conclusion 

           Peer review is a process that involves the verification of an article by a group of scholars before publication. When identifying and analyzing peer-reviewed research, I examine the article’s publisher, abstract, format, citations, references, author’s credentials, and if it focuses on generating knowledge. Strategies that can be employed to identify peer-reviewed articles include using the library database, limiting searches to peer-reviewed, and using Google Scholar.
