Historical Success

In an online educational program, there are many strategies one must develop to be successful. Time management is one of the most important strategies for me. Distractions can derail ones focus and lead to failure. Time management is complex with all the competing factors in the busyness of life. In a traditional setting, class time is offered on campus at a specific time there is a clearly defined classroom and base to start the learning process. In the online classroom, the flexibility requires one to engage with increased frequency (Alvarez Sainz et al., 2019). While the flexibility can be helpful, it also requires dedication to manage successfully. One strategy I have used in the past is to write out my schedule and plan my class time in a way like my undergraduate studies where I have a schedule that required me to be in specific rooms on campus. Time blocking is what I currently use and have found helpful. To time block, one simply creates immovable blocks within their schedule. As work arrival times are fixed for many, the same dedication is needed for success in an advanced degree setting. Making a list of the items I need to accomplish and establishing a time to complete each component has been helpful.

Anticipated Success

A new strategy I look forward to trying is the effective use of technology. I have found I often get pulled away by my phone and how it allures me to look at it each time it makes a noise. To minimize the distraction of my phone I am planning on silencing my phone during my devoted time blocks to ensure I am less distracted. Using the “do not disturb” setting will help ensure my eyes are not pulled to my phone. Technology overload is common in our world today (Orhan et al., 2021). While I expect this to help, I know myself and will also need to put the phone in another room to ensure I do not carelessly pick it up and venture down a rabbit hole only to find I have wasted the hour I set aside to accomplish a task. Knowing weaknesses and strengths of oneself is imperative. Learning daily areas one can improve will allow for adjustments that will lead to great success.

Conclusion

Success in any educational endeavor is complex. Current world situations with lockdowns, limitations on group meetings and life fluctuations are requiring agile mindsets for many. The flexibility of online education is great for social distancing and ensures educational endeavors can continue without major interruption. With this flexibility comes responsibility and establishing a robust plan will improve the likelihood of successful completion. Time management allows for balance in life and a favorable outcome.

One of the skills I am using now as a Family Nurse Practitioner is planning. Planning helps me to organize my work for the next day and to achieve the desired goal at the end of my shift. It involves creating and maintaining a plan by using psychological aspects that require actual conceptual professional skills.

As nurses, we strive to give patient-centered care and work in line with the best evidence-based practice to provide health and wellbeing for our patients, profession, and families.   We provide an assessment that gives us an opportunity for subsequent planning that ultimately benefits our patients. This gives an appropriate vision that increases our productivity as health care professionals (Britton, 2017).

I used these four strategies to plan my day; first I determine the strategic position, secondly, I prioritize my objectives, thirdly, how the plan is managed and executed, and finally, review and review the plan. By the end of the planning, my mission, vision, and goals are achieved. Also, it is vital to reevaluate your priorities and strategic positions to make sure that you stay on track for success in the long term. Health care professionals need to understand that planning successfully can be overwhelming but it is necessary to strategize the plan to develop a realistic goal or success (Carlson & DelGrosso, 2021).

I believe that using effective technology that I have not tried will be beneficial in my strengths and weaknesses. Effective technology will provide an appropriate plan that is easier, faster, and more efficient in communication. It helps in developing new techniques and providing better productivity and satisfaction to workers in an organization.  Weaknesses in using technology are loneliness and distractions that occur in the workplace. Some of the effective use of technology that nurses use are pagers, bar code scanners for medications, and smartphones for communicating with the doctors; which are all efficient devices use in the hospitals to help facilitate things in the workplace (Ray, 2016).

Dorothy,

I agree that planning is a powerful strategy. I did not do that formally when working on my PhD, but every week I informally planned when I would have the time to study.

Your suggestion is so important insofar as technology. It is one I seldom have students write about, but it is so essential to have a technology back up plan. One thing I would add is the importance of not waiting until the last minute to post or write an assignment. I frequently get students who reach out to me to tell me that they loss their Internet due to weather, or another reason. My response most often is to not give an extension because they waited until the last minute. Of course it is different if a tornado or hurricane hits their home, but that is a rare occurrence.

Multitasking can be another very tricky strategy. It is a skill that requires continuous practice to get better. However, I do feel that it is a skill that all clinicians need to be proficient in. There are times in our practice where we have to focus on multiple things so that we can effectively treat everyone and in a timely manner. Hopefully you and your peers are also proficient in multi-tasking:-)

Hello Dr. Harvey,

Thank you for throwing more light on my post for this week.  My peers and I are multi-tasking, but I know that doing multiple tasks comes with a lot of expertise in the field. To be a health care professional, you must be able to do multiple tasks without making errors. Evidence-based have shown that training a health care professional in multitasking helps to decrease omissions that could have occurred when they failed to complete the original task that he or she was interrupted (Adams & Rho, 2017). So, my peers and I are doing multitasking, but we pay more attention to what we are doing to avoid medical errors.

Historical Achievement
Success in an online educational program requires the development of numerous techniques. For me, time management is one of the most essential methods. Distractions can impede concentration and result in failure. With all of life’s competing demands, time management is a difficult skill to master. Class time is offered on campus at a fixed hour, and there is a clearly defined classroom and starting point for the learning process. The adaptability of the online classroom necessitates a greater frequency of participation (Alvarez Sainz et al., 2019). While the flexibility might be advantageous, it also demands commitment to handle effectively. I have utilized the method of writing down my calendar and planning my class time in a manner similar to my college education, in which I was expected to be in specific rooms on campus. Time blocking is a technique I now employ and find useful. To time block, one simply builds immovable scheduling chunks. As many people have established job hours, the same level of commitment is required for success in an advanced degree program. Creating a list of the tasks I need to complete and setting a deadline for each component has been useful.
Anticipated Success
Utilizing technology effectively is a novel method I am excited to test. I find that I am frequently distracted by my phone and its ability to entice me to look at it whenever it makes a sound. In order to avoid being distracted by my phone, I want to silence it throughout my designated time periods. Using the “do not disturb” setting will prevent my attention from being drawn to my phone. Today, technology overload is widespread (Orhan et al., 2021). While I expect this to be helpful, knowing myself, I will also need to place the phone in another room so that I do not waste the hour I set aside to complete a task by casually picking up the phone and going down a rabbit hole. Knowing one’s own weaknesses and talents is essential. Learning everyday areas for improvement can enable one to make modifications that will result in great achievement.
Conclusion
Success in any activity involving education is complex. Current global circumstances involving lockdowns, restrictions on group meetings, and life changes necessitate for many an adaptable mentality. The adaptability of online education facilitates social separation and guarantees the continuity of educational pursuits. With this flexibility comes accountability, and a solid plan will increase the likelihood of accomplishment. Time management facilitates life balance and a positive conclusion.

Your “distraction” tactic and “Do Not Disturb” sign are fantastic! I consider that to be an excellent plan. I appreciate you sharing.
I’ve always found it beneficial to visualize my goals, especially when I’m feeling discouraged. During my doctorate studies, I would create a simple pie chart and update it when I completed my projects and papers. It let me understand how close I was to completing my education and kept me motivated.
I do not understand how someone can be successful in this curriculum without time management skills and at least rudimentary Excel spreadsheet creation skills, etc. I believe that being able to use and comprehend technology is a tactic that has empowered me. During my doctoral studies, I learnt how technology can simultaneously benefit and challenge individuals.
I also believe that excellent communication is one of the most essential strategies. Even when no one was listening, I would read my writings out loud before to uploading them. When I could get someone to hear me read aloud, I would read a few paragraphs aloud and then attempt to teach the material by summarizing what I had read aloud. I found this informative. Maybe it might work for some of you as well.

Indeed, time management is one of the pillars of successful online learning (Pérez-lvarez et al., 2017). Time management requires a great deal of self-discipline because, unlike physical learning, no one is present to monitor your progress and keep you on track. It is crucial that a learner utilize his or her time management abilities. I am impressed that you have a plan to combat distractions, which typically consume valuable study time. Creating a timetable is essential, but as I mentioned, discipline is essential (Martin & Bolliger, 2019). When it comes to creating timetables, one activity that has helped me is defining big or key assignments in advance and monitoring my workload frequently. I then record them on my calendar and continue to monitor it to ensure that I am on schedule and am aware of the amount of work I should have in the upcoming weeks. With this knowledge, I would subsequently be able to complete my tasks on time.
Staying connected is one of the methods I believe to be most vital. Online learning can be a solitary endeavor because, in most circumstances, there is no face-to-face interaction with peers to discuss course content and how to do better (Kahn et al., 2017). I believe it could be crucial to make an effort to get to know classmates through online learning forums and social media platforms. Efforts made to answer engaging questions and provide courteous responses to peers’ questions might facilitate the development of such a relationship through online discussion boards. The responses of classmates can be an invaluable resource when completing class assignments and preparing for exams.

Indeed, one of the pillars of successful online learning is time management (Pérez-Álvarez et al., 2017). Properly managing an individual’s time requires a lot of discipline since, as opposed to physical learning, no one may be there to regularly check-in and ensure that you are on track. It is therefore important that a leaner leverages his/her time management skills. I am impressed by the fact that you have a strategy to deal with distractions which usually eats on precious study time. Coming up with a schedule is vital, but as I pointed out, discipline is key (Martin & Bolliger, 2019). When it comes to making schedules, one activity that has been of help to me is identifying major or key assignments beforehand and regularly check my workload. I then mark them on my calendar and continue checking to keep on track and know the amount of workload I should be having in the coming weeks. With such information in mind, I would then successfully perform my tasks in time.

Among the strategies that I consider most important is staying connected. Online learning can be a lonely exercise as, in most cases, there is no meeting with peers to discuss face-to-face matters regarding the course content and how to do better (Kahn et al., 2017). I believe that making an effort to know fellow classmates through online learning forums and social media platforms could be key. Building such a learning relationship can effectively be done through the online discussion boards by making efforts to answer engaging questions and giving respectful answers to the peers’ questions. Peers’ answers can turn out to be a valuable resource in answering class assignments and while preparing for examinations.

I am impressed by your discussion post concerning making your work as a family nurse practitioner a success. Indeed, due to various complexities involved, an individual must be prudent enough to come up with strategies that will help him/her go around or over the potential barriers (Copanitsanou et al., 2017). As you have stated, planning is one of the most powerful strategies. While some may actively and consciously plan for a day’s or a week’s activities, other people do planning but unconsciously without giving it much thought (Aasmul et al. 2018). However, the fact remains that everyone usually does some kind of planning. I believe that the process of planning should start as early as possible. For instance, as a Family Nurse Practitioner, the hospital facility requires that the nurse follows a routine in place. Such routines are to help the hospital as a whole to achieve the ultimate goal of ensuring that the patients get the best services for improved patient security and outcomes. Therefore, if a nurse fails to plan his/her day and weeks, then the result could be conflicts with the hospital management and even with the patients.

Thanks to technology and technological advancements, the daily work of a nurse can be made easier and, as you have noted, engage in faster, easier, and more efficient communication. Central to the use of technology should be the aim of improving patient outcomes (Bruce, 2018). One common misconception about using technology in the healthcare setting is that it can replace human resources. The truth is, technology should be used to complement the activities performed in ensuring that the patients get better services and improved patient outcomes (Daly Lynn et al., 2019). One thing I have always loved is to keep learning about the technological trends and how best they can be used in my areas of specialization to make my services better and better. Even though it’s a bit challenging, I believe that with a little more effort, we can afford to stay in front of the queue.
