A literature search is crucial in addressing a clinical practice problem as one has to conduct an organized search to identify key literature on the specific topic problem. Developing and refining a search strategy is essential to a successful and thorough literature search (Watson, 2020). The purpose of this paper is to outline the search strategy that will be used to gather evidence for the practice problem and explain how my role as leader assisted in making the decision.

Search Strategy

A search strategy refers to a planned structure of key terms employed when searching a database. It incorporates the key concepts of the search question to retrieve precise results. The first step in the search strategy is to choose the search terms that will be used in the literature search. The search strategy will include the likely search terms, keywords, and phrases. The keywords will be obtained from the PICOT question and will include: “Nurses,” “staff training,” “diabetic ulcers,” “improve knowledge,” and “knowledge scores.” These search terms will be used to search for relevant articles in the research databases (Watson, 2020).

In addition, I will apply Boolean logic to combine the key search terms. I will use Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT to try various combinations of the search terms. OR will be used to retrieve articles that discuss either of the topics searched (Herrström et al., 2020). For instance, I will use: “Diabetic ulcers” OR “Foot ulcers” to search articles that discuss either of the topics since they relate to diabetic ulcer complications. Furthermore, I will limit the search to peer-reviewed academic journals by limiting the results in the database to scholarly journals or academic journals. I will also apply Advanced Search Options when searching for EBP Randomized Controlled Trials or Meta-Synthesis studies (Watson, 2020). Lastly, I will limit the search to articles published in English and those published in the past five years to ensure the retrieved articles are recent.
