The perennial nursing shortage is a national healthcare issue of concern. Statistics at national and international levels show that the shortage of healthcare worker (HCWs) is profound and affects effective and quality service delivery. The World Health Organization (WHO) projects that the nursing shortage could hit 12.9 million by 2035 (Marc et al., 2018). Nursing shortage creates unsafe working environment and increases fatigue, high turnover rates, and make nurses susceptible to medication administration errors. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the situation as the demand for healthcare services has increased, leading to more strain and burden on nurses, especially those working in critical care settings and others with elderly patient populations with chronic and terminal conditions.

Nursing shortage has impacted my work setting negatively as we enhance efforts to provide care to a patient diversity coming to the facility. Low staff retention, reduced levels of patient’s satisfaction, and a rise in hospital acquired infections are some of the negative effects of nursing shortage in our facility. When patient workload exceeds the available shift nurses, patients experience low levels of satisfaction. Unsafe staffing ratios contribute to burnout and high turnover rates (Alenezi et al., 2018). Further, increased length of stay happens due to higher nurse-to-patient ratios lead to more complications and a rise of hospital acquired infections.

Many healthcare settings are struggling in responding to nursing shortage because of the few options available (Marshall & Broome, 2017). Our facility is now leveraging technologies like telehealth to enhance access and quality for patients with chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension who require constant monitoring. While studies show that nursing supply may exceed demand in the near future, using technologies and innovative models like increased training and flexibility can help organizations mitigate the adverse effects of nursing shortage.

These factors are also related to: insurance benefits, network size, premiums, acceptance, employment status; each of these economic factors having reciprocal affects. The Affordable Care Act contributes to the national collective by; mandating coverage and the creation of tax penalties for the uninsured, in order to better distribute health equity. Factoring the coverage of uninsured Americans has the potential to extend the safety net and reduce hidden subsidies by payors and practitioners (Dorsey, et al., 2013). The American healthcare system is a very complex industry that is intertwined with government. A brief understanding of these concepts creates a path for diligence and efficiency among healthcare workers.

While healthcare workers are not economists, healthcare personnel should take into account their actions have ripple effects within their particular organization. The average healthcare worker should remain cognizant of the effects between patients, expenditures and industry. It is important for the healthcare worker to remain diligent in their duties for: prevention of hospital acquired infections, re-admission, and material mismanagement. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the American supply chain was severely disrupted. Post pandemic inflation has skyrocketed while there are now talks of American default on its debts. These compile into heightened healthcare expenditures, which tolls organizational sustainability. Nurses should constantly remain aware of healthcare logistics as the alternative is reflected by huge costs. Material mismanagement events in subsequent low service quality delivered to patients (Iannone, et al., 2013). These constructs affect two of the five social determinants of health as described by (HHS, n.d.), economic stability and healthcare access and quality.

Healthcare organizations must take measures to ensure their own survivability. Policies must be put in place to mitigate risks and create accountability of healthcare workers, professional practices, protocols, material management and employee health expenditures. One method for organizations to lower costs related to employee health is workplace wellness programs. These are becoming increasingly popular within U.S. healthcare systems. There is an expectation that preventative programming will promote employee health, reduce medical costs, and improve productivity (Caloyeras, et al., 2013). An effective tool for improved material management and logistics is that of supply registration hardware/software. One example is the Omnicell Technology where healthcare workers must identify themselves before removing healthcare supplies that are linked to patient’s medical record numbers. This ensures accountability for the nurse, while minimizing waste, patient charges and logistics factoring. Greater accountability creates efficiency within an organization. This allows networks and employees to flourish throughout turbulent economic times within our country. As organizations flourish, so do communities, it is my hope that as a nation we will become more efficient in the many aspects of society in order to remain exemplary while maintaining our way of life.

Some people who are addicted to drugs are unable to work or maintain a meaningful connection with their families and friends, and they occasionally die as a result.

I understand your frustration. Everyone is entitled to a healthy working environment. A healthy environment promotes physical, mental, and social well-being. Additionally, if an organization values care, its choices, dispute resolution, and acknowledgment of nurses as professionals and champions for patient rights will show it. One of the essential jobs that nurses do is advocacy. We owe our sense of service to patients more than to physicians. Drug misuse sufferers face a great deal of societal prejudice and stigma since society has been programmed to believe they are dangerous and unfit to function appropriately in society (Duangjai et al., 2022). The essential thing somebody can do for themselves is to accept help. Unfortunately, the stigma prevents such individuals from seeking treatment. When people with drug addiction are treated the same as those with other disorders, more people will be confident to seek assistance and improve their lives.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us.
