Topic 1: Introduction to Project and Practicum

Topic 1: Introduction to Project and Practicum

The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) Nurse Executive Competencies define the knowledge, skills, and abilities that direct nurse leaders’ practice in executive practice in spite of one’s level of education, title, or healthcare setting. I am yet to discover my strengths and weaknesses as per the AONL competencies since I lack experience in a leadership role. Nonetheless, my nursing experience has enhanced my communication and relationship-building skills. I can effectively communicate through oral and written forms and facilitate discussions in groups. I also have effective relationship management skills as I can establish collaborative relationships with patients and colleagues, and I effectively apply conflict resolution skills.

Although I am yet to discover my leadership strengths and weaknesses, I believe that I can learn and develop the AONE competencies with time and experience as an MSN student and in my future practice. I will need to learn about professionalism in personal and professional accountability, ethics, career planning, and advocacy. Advocacy will be a crucial skill since I will employ it in my future practice advocating for nurses and patients at the local, state, and federal levels (AONE, 2015). As a nurse leader, I will need to develop my business skills since I will be involved in various areas of management including financial and human resource management. In addition, I will be expected to make a strategic plan, and therefore strategic management skills will be crucial. Leadership is another AONE competence that I need to develop, especially in areas of systems thinking and change management, which are crucial for nurse leaders (González‐García et al., 2021). My altruistic trait will help me become an effective leader.

I will integrate the knowledge of AONE competencies in developing a comprehensive practicum project by identifying areas in the organization that can be improved through effective leadership. A nurse leader should be competent with knowledge of the healthcare environment. Therefore, I will evaluate areas in the practicum setting environment that can be improved using my leadership knowledge and skills.
