Nursing theories are at the core of the nursing practice. Different nursing theorists have developed these frameworks from scientific evidence and data to offer various strategies and approaches to patient care. Nursing theories assist to ensure the profession carves its niche in the complex and evolving world of healthcare providers and diversity that increases to define healthcare demands (Adib-Hajbaghery & Tahmouresi, 2018). The purpose of this essay is to discuss the role of nursing theory in nursing.

Purpose of Applying Nursing Theory to Patient Care

Patient care entails certain approaches and practices that require guidelines and hypotheses for effective delivery. Nursing theories offer models and frameworks to anchor care practices and activities. Nursing theories help define the actions of nurses in care provision. For instance, Jean Watson’s caring theory in nursing entails ten factors that nurses must consider to provide quality patient care. These factors lead to a holistic approach to care as nurses integrate all of them to improve care delivery (DeNisco & Barker, 2018). Imogene King’s goal attainment theory and even Sister Callista Roy’s adaptation model all emphasize how nurses and patients should interact with their environment and form rapport to achieve patient care goals.

Nursing Theory as Meaningful to Current Practice

Nursing theories guide the nursing practice and profession. in their integrative review, Younas and Quenell (2019) assert that nursing theory-guided practice is critical to quality care provision. The current nursing practice is dynamic and focuses on patient-centered care. Therefore, nursing theories like human caring by Watson and health promotion by Nola Pender demonstrate the role of theories as meaningful to different aspects of the nursing practice. Watson’s model emphasizes holistic care as a core part of nursing which implies that nurses should integrate cultural and personal aspects of patients to deliver care. Nola Pender’s health promotion model is emphatic that nurses as patient advocates promote care by offering evidence-based practice approaches (Younas & Quennell, 2019). The implication is that the current nursing practice is dynamic, diverse, and complex which requires nurses to have these guidelines to understand the most effective way to offer care to patients.

Application of Nursing Theory Before Planning and Provision of Care

The use of nursing theory can happen before planning and providing patient care in present practice. For instance, Florence Nightingale’s theory on nursing, environmental theory, advances that healing lies within the individual human being and the focus of care is placing the person in a supportive environment to attain the healing process (DeNisco & Barker, 2018). Therefore, this theory is categorical that nurses should plan carefully before they implement it. Further, it implores nurses to develop a preventive approach to care by creating an environment that allows healing for patients.

Theory Reflecting My Personal View of Nursing & Its Application

Nursing is about offering compassionate care to patients and advocating for better health among communities. Imperatively, a majority of these theories apply to my worldview. However, the theory that resonates well and deeply with my worldview is Watson’s caring theory. My worldview entails having a diverse approach and considering caring as the core aspect of nursing. My worldview advances that as a nurse one should be willing to integrate care based on a patient’s diversity to attain better outcomes. As such, Watson’s theory offers a holistic approach to nursing which includes the realization of diversity as a core aspect of care provision (DeNisco & Barker, 2018). The theory is essential in the planning and provision of care because it implores nurses to approach care from a holistic perspective.

Conclusion

Nursing theories play a critical role in care provision as they offer guidelines on how nurses should provide patient-centered care. These theories offer guidelines and the best approaches to diverse patient cases, especially in the present practice environment. As such, they are an integral part of care planning for nurses and other health care professionals.

Emerging Technology Brief

Nursing theory is important to the nursing profession, including nurse practitioners. Nurse theories provide a framework and structure for nursing practice. They offer a systematic way of thinking about patient care, helping nurse practitioners make informed decisions and provide high-quality care. Nursing theories help standardize and unify nursing practice (Younas & Quennell, 2019). They provide a common language and foundation for nurses to communicate and collaborate effectively. This is particularly important in interdisciplinary healthcare professionals. The study of nursing theories encourages critical thinking and reflection. Nurse practitioners can use these theories to critically evaluate their practice, identify improvement areas, and adapt to changing healthcare environments. In summary, nursing theory is valuable to the nursing profession, including nurse practitioners, as it provides a foundation for practice, fosters critical thinking, and guides ethical, evidence-based care. However, it should be seen as a tool to enhance practice rather than a rigid set of rules, and it should be integrated with clinical expertise to provide the best possible patient care.

Nursing theory is important to the profession of nursing and the practice of nurse practitioners. Incorporating nursing theories into the education and practice of advanced practice nurses, this education enhances the knowledge of practicing nurses and provides the basis for competent care to be provided in the practice. Theories in nursing, clarify principles, values, and meaning within the profession. (Iskandarani, 2012). For nurse practitioners to carry out their specific roles, it’s important that the practitioner has a good understanding to apply the theory in practice. In addition to theories being the basis of practice for nurse practitioners to provide excellent care, evidence-based practice will allow the nurse practitioner to make clinical decisions based on most current practices. Whether in educational or clinical settings, nurse practitioners must continue to advance their knowledge of nursing theories and incorporate these theories into a greater understanding of evidence-based practice. As research continues, theories may need advancing or modification, however, the basis of the theory will remain the same. Theory-based education sets a standard for providing care in the workplace. From Nightingale’s Environmental theory to Orem’s Self-Care theory, the overall goal of the nursing theorists is to improve the health and quality of life for patients, by providing a basis for the clinical decisions that nurse practitioners will lead the charge as clinical leaders in healthcare.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.

Please, be advised I do NOT accept any assignments by email. If you are having technical issues with uploading an assignment, contact the technical department and inform me of the issue. If you have any issues that would prevent you from getting your assignments to me by the deadline, please inform me to request a possible extension. Note that working fulltime or overtime is no excuse for late assignments. There is a 5%-point deduction for every day your assignment is late. This only applies to approved extensions. Late assignments will not be accepted.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
