Childhood Obesity

The high prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents remains a serious public health concern in the U.S and in other parts of the world. Specifically, it is estimated that over 19% of American children and adolescents are at the risk of obesity and the prevalence is projected to continue rising (Nittari et al., 2020). There are various co-morbidities associated with childhood obesity that may adversely affect neurologic, musculo-skeletal, endocrine, pulmonary and cardiovascular systems resulting in diseases such as obstructive sleep apnea and type 2 diabetes (Kumar & Kelly, 2017). Childhood obesity may also have other adverse effects such as depression, anxiety and low self-esteem from the abnormal fat accumulation. As such, there is a need to study this health crisis and determine ways through which childhood obesity can be addressed. While various studies have focused on childhood obesity, the present study seeks to assess the impact of extracurricular activities on childhood obesity. As such, the leading research question or objective is to evaluate the relationship between extracurricular activities and childhood obesity.

Based on the identified research question, the appropriate epidemiologic design would be a cross-sectional observational design. There are many types of study designs related to research.  Choosing the correct design type is imperative on conducting an appropriate study and coming out with accurate results.  Some of the suggested designs studies include descriptive, ecologic, cross sectional, case control, cohort or experimental.

Population Health Problem

The chosen population health problem for this assignment is schizophrenics and antipsychotic-induced weight gain (AIWG).  Unfortunately, metabolic syndrome and patients that are overweight have a lower life expectancy (Dayabandara, et al., (2017).  There are several different types of research that could be done on this topic.  The chosen study question for this population health problem is: What weight gain effects does the daily use of antipsychotics have on adult schizophrenic patients that are provided programs, support and educational materials about weight management vs schizophrenics that only take antipsychotics and are not provided other types of non-medication support.

Case Control Study

To find answers for the study question, the most appropriate epidemiologic study design is a case control study.  These types of studies are sued to observe different factors that pertain to a certain disease or outcome (Tenny et al., 2021).  These studies are used to help increase evidence associated between different types of exposures and a disease or event (Tenny et al., 2021).  This is the type of information that is needed to find out if there are benefits for proper weight management for those schizophrenic patients that are provided non-medication interventions while taking daily antipsychotics.  

Strengths and Limitations

A strength of case-control studies is that these studies can identify potential links and exposures that affect a certain disease (Tenny et al., 2021).  There are also some limitations related to case-control studies.  One of the limitations is that the researcher must put a lot of effort into identifying appropriate participants within a control group to increase the validity and accuracy of the study (Tenny et al., 2021.  This may be difficult when working with Schizophrenic patients especially if they are having issues with their psych health.

Summary

Though there are many types of studies, the most appropriate type of research identified for this assignment is a case-controlled study.  This type of study will provide information about improving weight control of schizophrenic patients that are taking antipsychotics by providing non medication interventions.  Different types of groups can be tested to provide such information.
