There have been existing gaps between research and clinical practice, therefore Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) was introduced to try and bridge those gaps. It does so by changing the emphasis in clinical decision making from “intuition, unsystematic clinical experience, and pathophysiologic rationale” (Zimmerman, 2013) to scientific, clinically relevant research. EBP is a problem -solving approach to healthcare delivery wherein health professionals use the best evidence possible to make clinical decisions for patients. (Melnyk & Fineout-Overhold, 2019). EBP enhances healthcare quality, improves patient outcome, reduce cost, and empowers clinicians. (Laureate Education, 2018).
In view of the above, I reviewed the website of Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) for my discussion. It is a Federal agency charged with improving the safety and quality of America’s healthcare system. The agency develops the knowledge, tools and data needed to improve the healthcare system. AHRQ therefore help Americans, healthcare professionals, and policy makers to make informed health decisions (AHRQ, n.d.).
EBP appears in the AHRQ’s mission statement. The agency’s mission is to produce evidence to make healthcare safer, of higher quality, more accessible, equitable and affordable. AHRQ and its collaborating entities promote and support the synthesis, transfer, and utilization of evidence by identifying feasible, appropriate, meaningful, and effective healthcare practices (AHRQ, n.d.). These would assist in the improvement of healthcare outcomes in America.
I have often used the information on AHRQ’s website in previous assignments and I am always impressed by the quality of their work. My perception that they are the gold standard in quality research has not changed. In conclusion when providers deliver evidence -based care, patient outcomes are markedly improved.

Utilization of evidence-based practice (EBP) has brought proven practice from research to the bedside, which has benefited nurses in providing safe and effective patient care (Laureate Education, 2018). EBP provides resources that nurses can rely on when initiating patient treatment. “Research supports that EBP improves healthcare quality and safety, patient outcomes, and healthcare costs as well as empowers clinicians, leading to higher job satisfaction” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019, p. 29). Some healthcare organizations have adopted and implemented evidence-based practice in clinical decision making and have also incorporated evidence-based practice in the organizations’ goals.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is an organization that helps promote health at the global level. According to the organization’s website under “About Us” and “Our values” section, it states “we are guided by the best available science, evidence and technical expertise” (World Health Organization, n.d.). This statement proves that the World Health Organization’s work involves utilizing evidence-based practice in their efforts to impact global health. Their website produces publications and information on health-related issues using reliable resources to educate the public and upholds high ethical standards.
I was always aware of the WHO’s global impact in health promotion; however, I was never aware of the credibility behind the organization. My perception has changed since researching the website because I am better informed on their background and true credibility based upon evidence-based data. The WHO’s website is very informative on global health issues, such as Covid-19. Anyone can access data from this website under “Newsroom” and “Data,” which provides information on news releases, campaigns, and data collections. Health information on various individual countries can also be accessed.

I thought this was a fantastic choice to investigate for Evidence Based Practice. The World Health Organization (WHO) is the pillar of global health. As stated on their website, they work “worldwide to promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable” by addressing various issues that affect the global population such as noncommunicable disease prevention, antimicrobial resistance, mental health promotion, and elimination of high-impact communicable diseases that pose potential threat to the masses (WHO, 2020). I have found myself referring to the WHO website for information related to health concerns, specifically the newest Coronavirus strain that has emerged. I feel that information from the WHO site is the most accurate and up-to-date with information. This site addresses healthcare issues that could affect every man, woman, and child globally. The goal of the WHO is to help combat diseases and help build a better future for people everywhere (WHO, 2020). All of the aforementioned would require significant research and standards of processing and disseminating information. So obviously, as you pointed out and as described in the course material, EBP is and should be an integral part, the foundation even, in the work of reliable health organizations like the WHO (Laureate, 2018). Thank you!

Evidence as defined by Melnyk and Fineout-Overholt (2023) is the collection of facts that are supported by proofs from established process. Application and integrating new knowledge generated from research studies into clinical practice makes medical intervention reliable and effective. It is the best practice that convinces health care consumers of the intervention that has been proven to be effective. The goal of EBP is to improve quality of care, ensure safety of care, optimize positive patient outcome and reduce health care costs. Clinicians feel more confident to make effective logical clinical decisions based on knowledge generated from research findings.
To determine which care or intervention works and produce the best patient outcome, there are healthcare organizations and accredited professional bodies that regulates and disseminate quality and up-to-date information to equip healthcare professionals with EBP knowledge, skill and resources that will improve quality of care with maximum patient outcome. To promote excellence in nursing practice through EBP, the American Nurses credentialing Center awards magnet recognition to healthcare institutions that meets the standard of exceptional quality patient care and innovation in nursing practice.
The healthcare organization website that I reviewed is the US preventive services task force (USPSTF) sponsored by the Agency for healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). The mission is to make evidence-based recommendations available for primary healthcare clinicians and patients to make informed decision about healthcare conditions based on the review of existing peer-reviewed articles with the goal of improving public health and prevent diseases. Meta-analysis results of existing systematic reviews from JAMA network, MEDLINE, CINAHL, PubMed and Cochrane databases were included on the website which makes this healthcare organization grounded in EBP but the recommendations addresses services offered at primary care settings only. I read about screening all patients for anxiety, depression and suicide at the point of contact which is different from the usual suicide screening that I knew about. Some medical conditions originates from anxiety, and depression leads to suicidal thoughts. This preventive measure of detecting medical conditions early through anxiety and depression screening can reduce the cost of hospital admission. This healthcare organization website will be a good resource for me as a PHCNP.

Sample Answer 5 for NURS 6052 Week 1 Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice Discussion
I enjoyed reading your discussion, and you did a great job covering what evidence-based is, reviewing your organization’s website, and explaining how the organization utilizes EBP. Balakas et al. describe evidence-based practice as an application of evidence combined with healthcare experts who can bring all the information together and make decisions based on the evidence (Balakas et al., 2017). Although research and systematic reviews are done, there is still a need for professionals to gather the collected data and evidence, understand it, and make decisions that will implement best practices of care. Before entering the program, I did not realize how in-depth evidence-based practice is. There is more to it than researching a problem, finding an answer, and implementing it. The work behind these organizations is imposing. According to Melnyk et al., evidence-based practice is a lifelong approach to solving problems in healthcare with well-designed evidence (Melnyk et al., 2014). I agree with this statement. As healthcare evolves, more issues will arise, and we will continue to rely on EBP to guide us in safe care.

Essentials of Evidence-Based Practice-Spring 2024
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is a core part of delivering quality care interventions to patients with diverse health conditions (Melnyk et al., 2022). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is the U.S.’s leading science-based, data-driven, and service entity whose main mandate is protecting public health. CDC’s vision is to equitably protect the health, safety, and security of American citizens and residents. The organization’s mission is to work 24/7 to protect America from threats that include health, safety, and security, both in foreign lands and at home. The CDC focuses on public health aspects like food security and safety, health and weight, tobacco and smoking campaigns, and vaccination initiatives.
Evidence-based practice (EBP) appears on the organization’s website through its mission, vision, and pledge. The pledge to the American people of being a diligent steward of resources, offering an environment for intellectual and personal growth and integrity, basing public health decisions on the highest quality scientific evidence, prioritizing the common good, and treating all people with respect, dignity, and honesty all demonstrate its grounding in EBP. In 2022, the organization also launched its Moving Forward model focused on redefining and modernizing its structures, systems, and processes in developing and using science and programs to improve healthcare. These aspects all illustrate the importance of EBP to the organization (CDC, 2022). CDC’s work is based on EBP as it illustrates that it makes decisions based on the best and quality scientific data to meet public preferences and concerns. For instance, its Moving Forward initiative is founded on EBP since it focuses on improving approaches to health issues impacting populations and individual patients.
The information on the CDC’s website is rich and offers more insight into the organization’s vision and mission. CDC’s pledge to Americans shows its unrelenting efforts to improve healthcare within the nation and for its population. Therefore, the website has changed my perception as it shows beyond doubt that it is a critical implementer of EBP (Mellerson et al., 2020). For instance, its approach to the future changes my perception as it shows its commitment to improving the lives of American citizens and residents.

While getting my undergraduate degree, I remember the emphasis of EBP particularly in the hospital setting. It was stressed to us the importance of prevention of hospital acquired infections. The Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) has an emphasis of EBP, especially in their publication of scope and practices. “This publication highlights the emerging roles of Medical-Surgical Nurses, including the promotion of exemplary nursing practice, scholarly activity with dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practice guidelines, and a commitment to promotion of continuing education for self and others.” (AMSN, n. d.) The AMSN offers membership but also certification as a Med-surg nurse. They base this certification heavily on EBP in the med-surg setting.
“The staff nurse is a critical link in bringing evidence ‐ based changes into clinical practice,” (Majid et al, 2011) therefore, I believe the med-surg nurse could play a vital role in EBP in the hospital setting. Med-surg is a “catch-all” sort of department in the hospital setting. Here is where I believe a nurse would see the most diverse type of care ranging from gastrointestinal to cardiac. I believe PICOT questions could be easily formed here due to the patient population. Since there is no shortage of hospitalized patients that go through a med-surg floor, especially in the ear of COVID-19, practitioners are able to “ask the burning clinical question in PICOT format.” (Melnyk&Fineout-Overholt, 2019, p.17)
I did not know this organization existed prior to my research, so I did not have any perception to change. But I believe this organization is a productive one. They encourage med-surg nurses to pursue certification in their field and promote continuing education that includes EBP. I believe this organization could be empowering and supportive of the med-surg nurse.
