This course provided foundational and introductory knowledge regarding informatics with an emphasis on developing an understanding of concepts of nursing informatics (NI) and becoming knowledgeable about the application of informatics in advanced practice. Reflect upon one NI competency relevant to APNs which you learned in this course. Provide a brief summary (100 words or less)

Nursing informatics has grown over the years to take a central role in patient care activities and initiatives for improving patient care outcomes. Indeed, it is currently uncommon to talk about healthcare environment technology without mentioning nursing informatics knowledge, skills, and competencies (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2021). This course has played a fundamental role in helping me develop an understanding of nursing informatics concepts. Various nursing informatics competencies relevant to APNs were learned in this course. For example, one of the competencies learned in this course is communication management (Kleib& Nagle, 2018). Communication management is key to better patient care services and working relationships. Therefore, it is essential for an APN to have informatics skills and knowledge to help in better information management as well as the provision of better care to patients.

I used the Epocrates Essential app as a reference guide as an ER nurse. It has been helpful in many ways. For example, it identifies pills in an overdose patient. The mobile app combines communication and computing features, allowing easy access and use at the point of care. Another example is the mhealth app had a record of recent laboratory results.  This was beneficial to know with a patent with a GI bleed to compare laboratory results. In addition, this helps facilitate communication among healthcare professionals.

The transition from registered nurse to nurse practitioner is a significant career role transition.  The responsibilities will be essential as advancements in digital technology continue to increase patient care options.  Understanding security requirements and protecting patients’ personal information must be a top priority.  APNs may need to provide care with an interactive video visit keeping in mind privacy. Telehealth is a safe and convenient alternative to care to in-person visits. This is beneficial for older adults who have limited mobility.  APNs need to be aware the patient’s home needs access to the internet and technology to conduct a video telehealth visit. Stay current is, attending education meetings and conferences and keeping open communication with other APNs.

Among other skills presented during this class, I learned about evaluation and management guidelines established by Medicaid and Medicare presented in this last module. While these guidelines seem straightforward, I realize that reimbursement of services depends on the correctness of documentation submitted with the claim. I believe that this skill will become paramount to my practice as APN, and I am eager to learn more about it in the following courses. In addition, I am curious to find out how billing and coding work for the practitioners who own their own practice, as I would like someday to do.

Throughout this course I have learned so much more about nursing informatics and the role it plays in our everyday nursing practice. I personally have experienced a growth in information literacy and computer literacy. Throughout this course and the previous ones we took we have had many opportunities to explore multiple databases and other applications to complete our assignments. Prior to taking this course, I did not know how to take a screenshot on the computer and never heard of the application called “Snipping Tool”. I also never heard of Respondus Lockdown Browser, and using these applications I was unfamiliar with challenged me to improve my competency and I was able to navigate and learn how to use them. The more I was challenged, the more knowledge I acquired. As a future APRN, it will be my responsibility to ensure competency in modern technology as it plays a major role in nursing practice, and building knowledge will also increase my patients’ safety and quality of care. For example, being competent in the EHR at my facility will allow me as the APRN to not only review my patients charts, but also prevent any medical errors with the alerts in the system in addition to preventing any unnecessary duplicate orders. I can also utilize computer and information literacy to guide me in utilizing current evidence-based practices to further assist with my clinical decision making for my patients plan of care. The knowledge I have acquired from taking this course will guide me in my future practice as an APRN and will make me more confident in this future change of role.

One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.

I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.

Weekly Participation

Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.

In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.

Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).

It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.

Late Policy

The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.

Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.

If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.

I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.

As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.

Communication

Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.

Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
