NRS 430 Topic 1 DQ 1

Discuss why you have decided to complete your BSN at this time and the concerns you have about completing your baccalaureate degree. Based on the readings in the class and topic resources, what are some characteristics of successful students and what strategies can you implement to be a successful student?

The decision to complete my Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree is of a great importance to me, but it can be challenging to balance the demands of education with the responsibilities of parenthood. Having two boys under 3 years old and working full time made me delay my decision to take that next step. However, I felt that it was time for me to no longer make excuses and move forward with my education as it felt that I have put off pursuing my degree for far too long. For me, time is the major factor that kept me from going back to school. Moreover, it is essential to develop a realistic plan for completing coursework while still caring for my children, working and spending quality time with them. While the road ahead may be difficult, the rewards of achieving my BSN can be life-changing, both personally and professionally. I know it is never too late to pursue one’s dreams and goals, and with careful planning and perseverance, success is within my reach.

Successful students possess several characteristics that help them excel academically. These include self-discipline, effective time management, strong communication skills, and critical thinking which will help with better writing. As Angel Falkner mentioned in her book, Familiarity with fundamental elements of scholarly writing, like grammar, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary, formatting, and style, are generally assumed to be widely known. To become a successful student, one can implement several strategies such as developing a study plan, setting goals, prioritizing assignments, staying organized, continuously assessing progress and last but not least, actively participating in class, seeking help and support when needed. in her written article, Sanders mentioned that it is imperative to engage with your professors and peers even though your program is offered online. You have support available within the learning platform to connect with other students and faculty. By adopting some of these strategies and cultivating these characteristics, They can enhance my academic performance and help me achieve my goals.

It has been my desire to return to school to earn my bachelor’s degree in nursing since I graduated as an RN but have not been able to enroll due to a couple of challenges hindering me. Fortunately, I ran across an old friend who told me that she has her Bachelors degree and back again for her masters. She gave me the reason to leave my comfort zone to this wake up call.

To advance my nursing career, continuing education is necessary to attain my goal in a managerial position. Obviously, many hospitals and other healthcare facilities have preferences for nurses with a Bachelors degree. Also, there are more job opportunities in different fields of nursing. The desire to be enlightened and current with evidence-based practice will improve my competency.

NRS 430 Discuss why you have decided to complete your BSN at this time, and the concerns you have about completing your baccalaureate degree

Meanwhile, I have been a face-to-face student and have never enrolled in an online class, so I am concerned about taking my classes online and worried if I will be able to navigate the virtual learning process. Also, being a mother of six lovely children and working full time might be challenging with the school workload.

To be successful in this program, I will have to be able to manage my time effectively and efficiently. Also, by avoiding distractions and adhering to my schedule to achieve my desired goal. It is important for me to study material thoroughly to help me retain the information being passed on. I will also incorporate exercise to help me relieve stress.

I have decided to continue my education to further my knowledge, become more of an asset to my field, and expand my career. I am completing the bridge program for MSN in education. I currently precept new employees to my unit, I teach at education health fairs and am a part of the employee moral committee on my unit. I have grown to love teaching and would like to become more involved in education on my unit. With an MSN-E, I plan to work towards becoming the perinatal educator for the labor and delivery, NICU and post-partum units. I have just begun the program, so my plan may change; however, I know that I want to educate in the field that I am working currently. This is the perfect time for me to obtain my MSN-E because I just went part time at work in order to continue and further my education.

I am generally concerned about being in a completely online program and essay writting. I am grateful for the flexibility in the online program, but I have never attended school in this setting. Because of this, it has been an adjustment navigating and understanding the process. Working and exploring the Navigating Halo program has been very beneficial prior to starting class. This tool has been helpful by allowing me to learn how to navigate the classroom. The halo navigations system also gives me the opportunity to explore each link and learn more about them (Navigating Halo, 2021).

I plan to use the researching database, an essential tool, through the GCU library. There I can look up peer-reviewed articles by searching key concepts. I will be using the three Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT to narrow my search. Once I find articles, I will use the abstract to see if the article pertains to topic in question (Falkner, 2018). From there, I will use GCU’s writing center to reference how to formulate my papers. Using proper tools for APA formatting and citations will benefit me as well. Overall, I plan to use the proper tools to research appropriate articles, formulate a well-organized paper and avoid plagiarism in any of my work.

After graduating high school in 2000, I attended Oklahoma City University for their Bachelors of Nursing program. I failed out my third semester. I continued on my nursing journey and acquired my LPN license in 2005. In 2010 I graduated with an ADN. During this time, I worked and took care of my sick mother. Taking care of others has always been a passion of mine so I was determined to get to my finish line. I ended up taking my RN boards six times before passing in 2019, six months before my mother passed away.

Its been three years since she has passed and I am accomplishing things that Ive always wanted to and I’m not letting anything get in my way. I started travel nursing in August of last year and this felt like the perfect time to complete what I started twenty something years ago.

I really don’t have any concerns about finishing my degree this time around. I’m older, more mature and way more disciplined. I know that anything that I put my mind to I can accomplish. We can be our own worst enemy at times with our thoughts. Its all about positivity with me. At times when I feel overwhelmed, I will take a step back, close my eyes , take a deep breath and pray as I do now.

The most important characteristics of a successful student in my opinion are sufficient rest, managing time, focusing and asking for help when needed (Murphy, 2015). Ive learned over the years that if you can’t master these it is difficult to be successful. Strategies that I can implement are self discipline and focusing on what is important to me at this moment and that is furthering my education. Any distractions that I had have already been eliminated such as social media. But at the same time, I know that distractions and issues will arise. My life right now is all about work and school. Everything else can wait.

I am retired after many years of nursing practice. Reflecting back on my life, I know I made the right decision to enter the nursing profession. Every day was a new learning and rewarding experience. I have the urge to further my nursing education and reenter the always evolving nursing profession. Many changes have happened since I last practiced regarding nursing education levels and each’s scope of practice. After researching many nursing programs across the United States (US), I found Grand Canyon University (GCU) nursing programs to be the most affordable, resourceful, and user-friendly, especially the associate degree (ADN) to baccalaureate degree (BSN) five-week course online program. I have concerns regarding my lac of computer skills and potential difficulties such as loss of internet connection or program lag. I know my first week will be the most difficult, since it has been many years since I have attended an educational program, and this is my first online learning program.

Understanding and consistently implementing characteristics of successful students is important to being a successful student. An important characteristic of successful students is to be realistic, with time management being a priority. Remembering to allow sufficient time for yourself is crucial for good health and well-being, leading to having a clear mind and ability to focus on learning. Taking breaks when doing tasks at hand, rather than attempting to do it all at once or to multitask is important to help balance school and life’s happenings. Let those close to you be aware of your schedule and school demands (Sanders, 2019). Divide each day into sections of time and prioritize things to do for each section (Murphy, 2015). Monitor assignments and due dates. Study efficiently by having a designated, quiet, organized, well-lit study area (Sanders, 2019). Learn the resources and services available, and utilize them (Sanders, 2019). Requesting help is not a sign of weakness or failure (Murphy, 2015).

It is part of being proactive and a characteristic of successful students. Acknowledge and make positive use of feedback (Sanders, 2019). Feedback helps improve the learning process by better understanding each assignment, knowing what was done correctly and what needs correction or improvement. Feedback also positively influences future programs by troubleshooting and improving the current programs. Developing a personalized study system, and consistently implementing it, can make the nursing program less challenging (Murphy, 2015). It is necessary to be realistic and understand that this is not a perfect world. Distractions and disruptions will happen.

Maintaining my health and well-being, time management, and studying effectively, while proactively implementing resources and services available, along with remembering to take rest breaks and reward myself, are characteristics of the realistic plan I am developing to be a successful student.
