Hello! Understanding the dependent and independent variables are extremely important with respect to our capstone change projects. Being able to understand how the interventions will influence our research. And the results that come about from the interventions and change implemented. The capstone project that I am doing is on fall prevention, the use of bed alarms and the implementation of hourly rounding. As fall continues to be a concern, having a intervention in place to try and prevent these falls from occurring is extremely important. Falls lead our patients to be at risk for injuries and prolonged hospital stays. As most of our populations in the healthcare field are those of the elderly, falls in this population can lead to many devastating outcomes that can include death. The incidence of falls also leads to a large cost to the healthcare system as well. There are many interventions that be put into place such keeping the bedside table within reach, call light within reach, patients have been toilet, and pain medications given. Of course, falls can still occur but placing interventions to try and prevent these falls from occurring is an important task in our daily activities with our patients. There are different ways to measure how the interventions we put into practice are working. Such as seeing a reduction in falls and see an improvement with patient satisfaction with their care, we can see that the intervention is working. Seeing a reduction in call lights as well can be beneficial.

Change project outcomes characterize changes that are realized as a result of certain actions in the project. In healthcare industry, the changes typically entail improvements in health care services and products. When designing a capstone project, it is crucial to determine what the project outcomes entails to provide a way of gauging the project success and understanding the overall goals. The proposed project intervention is the adoption of health education on lifestyle changes to reduce the rates of obesity among obese adolescents. This intervention is crucial in providing appropriate information on obesity management and lifestyle changes to reduce obesity rates. The purpose of this paper is to outline measurable project outcomes for this proposed capstone project intervention.

Adolescent obesity is a multifaceted issue emanating from risk factors such as poor diet and lack of physical activity. The provision of health education on lifestyle changes is crucial in helping obese adolescents make smart and healthy choices about their health (Nga et al., 2019). Health education is critical in creating more awareness of the health risk linked to obesity and enabling obese adolescents to evaluate their habits and encouraging them to take personal responsibility for their lifestyle habits. Proper education is likely to encourage them to focus on consuming healthy diets, increasing physical activity, and developing coping techniques to sustain necessary behavior changes in reducing obesity rates (Nga et al., 2019).

Reduce the Economic and Societal Burdens Associated with Childhood Obesity

Obesity and its related health issues have dire economic impacts on the health care system including direct and indirect costs. Direct costs entail health care costs for obesity management, treatment, diagnostics, and prevention. Indirect costs entail productivity measures such as disability, premature death, and the development of other conditions that are likely to decrease adolescents’ productivity in adulthood. Moreover, childhood obesity has enduring effects such as health-threatening conditions over the entire course of life (Faienza et al., 2020). Also, childhood obesity can limit the creation of human capital and prospect the socio-economic status of adolescents. As such, it has effects on the individual obese adolescents, society, and the economy. Consequently, the provision of health education is likely to reduce rates of obesity among obese adolescents leading to the eradication of these economic and social burdens.

Improve Academic Outcomes among Obese Children and Adolescents

Obese adolescents tend to have lower life satisfaction and they are often bullied and stigmatized by colleagues. This tends to reduce their class participation and educational performance. There is an established relationship between obesity and poor academic performance, with obese children more likely to have poor performance compared to children with a healthy weight (Salam et al., 2020). However, health education on lifestyle changes is likely to reduce obesity rates and support the victims to restore healthy weight and improve their academic performance.

Improve Emotional and Mental Health in Obese Adolescents

Obese adolescents are often bullied, stigmatized, and excluded from social groups by other children. As a result, they feel lonely, neglected, and socially detached leading to mental and emotional health problems, lower self-esteem, and poor health (Nga et al., 2019).  Addressing adolescent obesity through health education on lifestyle changes is likely to reduce obesity rates, thus, eradicating these emotional and mental issues.

Create Policies to Support Healthy Lifestyles among Adolescents

The success of this change project will be crucial in helping to create sustainable obesity policy interventions to support healthy lifestyle changes such as nutrition education, physical activity, and skills to sustain life-long behavior changes, which are effective in facilitating healthy behavior habits that are crucial in decreasing obesity among the adolescents.


Health education on lifestyle changes, whether through health promotion campaigns or school-based is a crucial factor in addressing the remarkable increase in adolescent obesity and its associated diseases that is currently witnessed in society. As such, prompt actions and appropriate policies should be adopted to address these educational programs.

After working with my preceptor to assess the existing organizational policies, I have created a list of various measurable outcomes for the capstone project intervention. The intervention for this capstone project is the adoption of lifestyle health education to mitigate obesity among children. Health education is critical in the development of appropriate knowledge and development of awareness about childhood obesity management. The following are the measurable outcomes developed.

 Development of Awareness on Managing Childhood Obesity

One of the primary outcomes anticipated from this project’s intervention is the development of awareness among children and their parents to seek a healthy lifestyle and mitigate obesity. Health education on obesity management will also empower obese children and their parents to take individual responsibility to ensure a healthy lifestyle (Morales Camacho et al., 2019).

 Enhancement of Emotional and Mental Wellbeing

Obese and overweight children often face stigmatization, social exclusion, and bullying. In turn, they suffer loneliness, social detachment, and neglect, causing emotional and mental health issues such as poor self-confidence, poor health, and reduced self-esteem (Verduci et al., 2022). This project is essential in mitigating childhood obesity. Attaining a healthy weight will increase self-esteem, self-confidence, and reduce in risky behaviors. Additionally, a healthy weight will eliminate psychological problems associated with obesity such as stigmatization, discrimination, and depression.

Enhancement of Academic Performance

The stigmatization, social exclusion, and bullying experienced by obese children tend to adversely affect their academic performance and participation in class. Ideally, obesity is associated with poor academic performance. It is expected that the educational intervention in this project will help obese children to attain a healthy weight and avoid physical, mental, and emotional health. As result, their self-esteem and self-confidence will improve and eventually reflect on their academic performance.

Reduction in Childhood Obesity Rates

Childhood obesity is attributed to several factors including physical inactivity and poor nutrition. The implementation of health education will help obese children and their parents to have healthy and informed health choices. Health education will raise awareness of health choices associated with obesity and empower the victims to adopt healthy lifestyle habits such as a healthy diet, more physical activity, and coping strategies to maintain behavioral changes critical to obesity reduction (Faienza et al., 2020).


The implementation of health education intervention is vital to curbing the increasing rates of childhood obesity. It also helps in lowering the associated impacts and complications in the United States. Therefore, it is important to take action and pertinent policies to structure health education to achieve the desired outcomes.
