One recommendation for nursing education I believe will be most effective is the need for nurses to be properly educated in technology (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2021) . The future of nursing is headed to increased use of advanced technologies, including telehealth, data analytics, and even artificial intelligence (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2021). Therefore, it is important for any nurse, no matter the specialty, to be competent in using and understanding healthcare technologies.

Secondly, I think the recommendation to include cultural humility and implicit bias in nursing curriculum while also supporting a diverse nursing student population will be effective in creating change within the healthcare industry (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2021). I currently work at an inpatient psychiatric facility and see many types of patients from all different socioeconomic, religious, and cultural backgrounds. Especially in the mental health field, all aspects of a person’s culture plays a role in their health and how they view treatment. It is essential for nurses to be aware of how culture impacts a person’s health

and how implicit bias may affect nurses’ own practices. By including these topics in the nursing curriculum and having a more diverse nursing workforce, patient outcomes, communication, and satisfaction will ultimately be more positive.

Overall, I agree with how this report describes the future of the roles and responsibilities of the advanced practice

registered nurse. I think that there is a need to expand the scope of practice of  APRNs to help lift burdens in the healthcare system. In the not so distant future, I think most states will pass legislation to let APRNs practice more independently and to the full extent of their license.

The “Future of Nursing “Report highlights the desired outcomes with recommendations by the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice (NACNEP) (2020) especially with the COVID 19 impact on healthcare worldwide. The terms & concepts of social determinants of health (SDOH) & health equity remain latent even today among the nursing workforces.  I think Recommendation 7 & 3 will be most effective in creating change within the industry.

Recommendation 7 states that: Nursing education programs, including continuing education, should ensure that nurses are prepared to address social determinants of health and achieve health equity. The growing need for continuing education among nurses cannot be underrated. The Virtual platform is the most used method of teaching & learning among Nursing students & the nursing workforce in all settings, especially during the pandemic.  This need started off as a necessity but has proven to be more economical, adaptable & resourceful to & for the adult learner. The use of the language assistance program, at my workplace to encourage & promote diverse populations need for healthcare has served this purpose very well. In my experience an in-person interpreter service and/or a Telehealth face to face interpreter available 24/7 for the nurses & nursing students to assist patients with language barriers have proven to be a very effective tool to impart education.  Yet another example is the nursing students who come to the hospital for their clinic hours is placed in a variety of settings such as care coordination, supportive care team, to allow them to learn about population health & health equity. The last example that I would like to give is the introduction of Artificial Intelligence in the clinical care setting for nurses use a tool such as “Javion “which is an AI tool, to determine the risk of getting a skin /pressure injury based on their social determinants.

Recommendation 3 states that by 2021, the implementation of structures, systems, and evidence-based interventions should be initiated to promote nurses’ health and well-being, especially as they take on new roles to advance health equity.  We all can agree to that life challenges have increased over the decades making the work life balance extremely difficult for the family unit. In my early nursing career, I am guilty of going through 12 hour shifts without taking adequate breaks or rest periods due to high patient acuity.  We all would agree to that we cannot take care of our patients if we cannot take care of ourselves first.  The organizational structure of having a patient assignment as well as performing the role of a charge nurse during the shift, is not yet obsolete.  The introduction of wellness leave for nurses at my workplace is one of those initiatives that assists nurses with this need of allowing paid leave to schedule well visits, having a mammogram or Colonoscopy.  There is muck work to be done, in this arena but we are much better at promoting the well being of the bedside nurse or the nursing student than we were a decade ago. I agree to the report which states that the number of Advance Practice Nurses are expected to grow 6.8 % annually as compared to 1% of Physicians by 2030.  Thus, the need for Advance Practice nurses is evident for the community especially in the rural areas. This in turn will reduce health care disparities. It was evident that mental health related mortalities reduced as the prescriptive abilities of the Advance Practice nurses were increased.
