As an advanced registered nurse, you will serve as a leader within your organization. Part of this role will entail being a change agent, and spurring positive change on behalf of patients, colleagues, and the industry.

With the continuous introduction of challenging problems within healthcare, nurse leaders must assume the role of implementing innovative care models. Utilizing technology within healthcare has the ability to provide improved care while decreasing cost, so driving policy change to incorporate further technology is essential. Nurse leaders can do this by acting as a change agent. First, nurse leaders must create an environment that is ready and willing to change (Handzel, 2021). This can be done by sharing ideas, listening to opinions from others, involving a team approach, and acting authentically. Additionally, nurse leaders must investigate levels of risk, barriers, short-term goals, and long-term goals. Once these models have been implemented, the nurse leader has the responsibility to reflect on the outcome of the change and make further changes as appropriate.

The health care system in the United States tends to evolve constantly to keep up with the changes that consistently characterize the health care provision (Stalter & Mota, 2018). For instance, the shift to a value-based healthcare has resulted to quality care instead of attending to the highest number of patients by the providers. Value-based health connotes a reward system that provides incentives to health care providers depending on the quality they deliver to individuals with Medicare. The goals of value-based health care are to lower costs of health care, better health for individuals, and better public health in populations (Lewis, 2019). Value-based health care has impacted the delivery of care by ensuring provision of quality and affordable care services. On the other hand, it has impacted the nursing role by positively affecting the work environment for nurses, with quick patient discharge, reduced readmissions, and assignment of fewer patients to nurses. Consequently, the nurse to patient ratio, burnout, and workload decreases leading to less stress and increasing opportunities to pay more attention to patients, leading to improved health outcomes (Lewis, 2019). Value-based health care also stresses on strong care coordination, which also improves the workplace and environment for nurses.

include the impact of the alarming nursing shortage, increased specialization, concerns of privacy and confidentiality, continued growth of telehealth, advancing nursing education online, increasing entrepreneurship opportunities in nursing, and the rise of nurse navigator. According to AONL (2021), the advanced registered nurse can influence the direction of health care by formulating a clear strategic plan and goals to help in leading to desired direction.

Leadership can be a very difficult role, especially when change is met with strong resistance. The scenario provided is a controversial and ethical dilemma. Situations involving spiritual or religious beliefs can be very challenging. As a nurse leader and change agent, it is crucial to make decisions that are in the best interest of the organization, the members of the interprofessional team, and the patient population.

As a nurse leader in this situation, the first step I would take is confronting the resistance. Afterall, not all resistance is negative (Weberg et al., 2019). Often times, resistance is due to disturbance of standard procedure. Next, I would want to investigate what percentage of the team is resisting the change. Additionally, I would conversate with members of the team to understand what is causing the resistance, and steps that can be taken to overcome the resistance. Once this information is obtained, the nurse leader must make important decisions to decide next steps taken. In some circumstances, additional changes can be made to accommodate the members who are resisting. However, if the change is in the best interest of the organization, team members, and patient population, then the leader must embrace the resistance and focus their attention on the majority who are adopting the change.
