QI EBP Research
QI represents the framework used to improve how health care is delivered systematically. It is a data-driven process to improve quality and safety (CMS.gov, 2021). The goal is to achieve more effective and efficient care. EBP is a problem-solving approach to clinical practice. It involves integrating scientific evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences in decision-making regarding patient care  (Li et al., 2019). All three components are equally important. Health care research represents the quest for new knowledge. It is characterized by investigations and studies to find new conclusions (Pope & Mays, 2020). Clinical research focuses on human health.
QI, EBP, and research have some similarities and differences. The main similarity is that all focus on improving the health practice through new knowledge and better processes. They are established on the tenet that the health practice needs progressive improvement to achieve the desired goals. However, unlike QI, EBP is primarily problem-focused. It is also procedural and involves multiple aspects of care, such as clinical expertise and patient values. Research is a part of EBP since it is the source of scientific evidence, but EBP is not a part of research. Both EBP and research can drive quality improvement.
Examples A suitable example of QI is replacing paper-based processes with computerized processes. It has been common in electronic health records (EHRs) adoption. A relevant EBP would be drawing evidence from systematic reviews to better administer oxygen to patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). An appropriate example of research is in-depth investigation and tests to get vaccines for COVID-19.
Application in in a health care setting QI would be applied in a health care setting when the current processes become inefficient.  Quality declines when processes are slow or obsolete. EBP would be appropriate in a health care setting when there is a clinical issue requiring evidence-based interventions. Current and emerging issues threatening patient safety require an EBP approach. Research is most appropriate when new knowledge is required, particularly regarding treatment and infection control.
