If EHR provides accurate data and patient notes at the point of care, one would believe providers would be able to provide better care through collaboration because all of the information needed to make informed diagnoses and plans of care are readily available. The qualitative research method approach will be beneficial in answering the research question because it will identify the causes (values, feelings, and perceptions) of healthcare providers who fail to effectively collaborate and the impact it has on patient care.
The data collection method chosen is focus groups. Focus groups are a semi-structured group interview process with a group leader leading the session. Focus groups would be beneficial in collecting data for this research question because it allows research participants to speak openly about their feelings and views. The strengths of this data collection method include the assurance that the data collected is relevant to the research topic, large amounts of data may be collected in a short period of time in a particular setting and it provides access to comparisons that participants make between their experiences (RWJF, 2018). The comparisons made by participants may prove especially insightful due to the makeup of the patient care team and the role each person plays. A weakness associated with focus groups is difficulty in keeping track of who is speaking at all times because speakers may overlap at times (RWJF, 2018).
To ensure quality data is produced the evidence-based practice model will be utilized throughout the study. The EBP model consists of six steps. Step 1 is asking the right questions. Step 2 includes gathering data to support regarding the research question. Step 3 includes reviewing the collected data to develop an understanding of the current body of knowledge. Step 4 includes the proffer of an intervention or a strategy to improve outcomes. Step 5 includes the evaluation of the PICOT and a determination of whether the intervention met the desired outcome.
