It has been found that those who are in their adolescents are more likely to influence each other on their eating habits (Bruening, MacLehose, Eisenberg, Nanney, Story, & Neumark-Sztainer, 2014). Adolescents are more likely to choose to eat fast food or consume sugar drinks when they are with their friends versus when they are alone. In order to help shape healthy eating habits that the adolescent can grow with, it is better to make the resources available to them. If there are better alternative food and drink choices available with sugary food and drink being eliminated, the adolescent and their friends may influence each other instead to have better health habits.
The basic model for policy making that I believe would be the best applied to this issue would be the stage-sequential model. Instead of creating a drastic change that may upset people such as those who are marketing within the school, it would be easier to create a policy and implement it in an appropriate length of time, concluding with evaluating the effects that the policy has resulted in (Anderson, 1990). This policy model leaves the opportunity for changes to be made that need to be necessary in order to further improve the policy and its results.
I personally believe that there has been an increase in childhood obesity that is leading into adult obesity. Unhealthy eating habits can lead to not only obesity but coronary artery disease and diabetes as well. By helping our youth to fight these urges we can be helping them to lead healthier habits into their adulthood, as well as positively influence their friends and peers to also lead healthy lives.
